45/70 Range report
« on: January 22, 2007, 11:18:42 AM »
I have to give you guys a new report in a couple of weeks when i get back to the cabin. I did go up but never brought up a decent bench rest setup . As you remember my friend took my handi rifle 22" and cut it on a band saw for me to 18" then reamed the muzzle with a tapered hand reamer.I topped the rifle with a leupold 2.5 compact and set up a target at 50 yards using a hot seat on top a milk crate on a shakey table my first two shots almost touched . After that all hell broke loose and my groups opened  up then i found that the cheap set of rings i used loosened up under recoil. Not having any tools that ended the sesson but like i said the first two shots almost touched. I replaced the rings with a set of leupold rings i had and replaced the 2.5 leupold with a leupold vari-x II 2x7 I'll give you another report in a couple of weeks.  Tanoose

this made me think of the first time a shot a flint lock. i thought i pulled the shot by jumping when it went off, but there it was, dead in the bull. every shot after that until we fixed the sights was 13 inches low and left at 50 yards. i should have just figured out how to flinch like that every time :D

You'll probably like that 350gr w/4198, shoot it before you shoot the Buffalo Bore (after a couple of those you won't know if it's you or the gun) JMHO.

Dave the 350 load is my pet load it shot well before cutting the barrel as did the winchester factory loads, that 350 load was also my pet load when i used a marlin 1895. I loaded up some more handloads to try with the hornady 350 FP and i loaded up some remington 300 hp. Give me a week or two for my next report, and as long as the heavy snows stay where ever they are i'll be able to get to my cabin . Otherwise i'll have to make a trip to a long island range. Guys do yourself a favor and try my pet 350 Grain load in your 45/70's. It is a 350 grain Hornady RN or FP ahead of 28.0 grains of 2400. It is the most accurate load I have shot out of my 22" barreled 45/70 Handi and is is easy to shoot with no objectionable recoil....<><.... :)
