Did a little stock swapping!
« on: January 22, 2007, 01:47:47 PM »
Taking a que from Mac and his XLR, I swapped the gray laminate stock off the .405 Winchester and put it on the SS .30-06, looks as good as I envisioned, a perfect match to the XLR cousin!! Put the TDC stock set on the .405 Winchester with Bushnell Trophy scope.

I bought it from Kufford here, in the syn stocks  he had acceptable accuracy after he got it back from H&R for a chamber problem, too little headspace IIRC, but barely as I recollect, 2"+. I never shot it that way, put a camo lam set on it, polished the bore and chamber and shot 150gr Fusion ammo with it, accuracy was just over 1" IIRC, velocity I remember well at just over 3000fps, The only syn stock set that I've had good luck with out of the box is on my .30-30, others I've had to play with hole position and O-rings to get to shoot good.

I don't know if y'all notices, but it also has polished steel spacer, trigger guard, hammer, trigger and barrel release, no black parts. ;)

I don't think an SS .45-70 barrel is available, but ya never know, they supposedly never made 24" bull barreled Hornets either, but Shaner has one!! ;D

Don't tell the ATF, spanky!!

Thx,

Tim

Quick -- Glad to see that I am not the only gun crank who stores rifles muzzle-down -- let the solvent drain out, instead of back against the stock. You have a couple of fine-lookin' rifles there!

Quick, As usual, nice job!

Since Mac inspired you, then you inspired me to try something: I put my BC stocks on my son's Sportster, then put my Gray lams on my daughter's gun. My son still needs a youth stock, so the BC won't fit him for awhile yet (but it sure fits me nice!).

Whatever the BC's end up on for me will have a receiver sight, though as shown in the pic they ain't really too bad for using the scope.

p.s. I'm working on a page for the Handholic website for just Handi mods... hint hint!

Lookin good, Kerry!!! I love this, musical Handi stocks!!! ;D ;D ;D Hmmmm, haven't done anything with the Sportsters.....yet!!! The only bad thing about swapping stocks around, is they need to be shot again, and with my poor memory, I won't remember which went where and when I shot it!!! :o

I've always stored my muzzleloaders muzzle down, but after finding a bunch of oil on the latches and learning that many accuracy complaints at H&R are solved by drying the latch, I started putting them all muzzle down, it's also easier on the Limbsaver recoil pads, they tend to deteriorate when on the floor under the weight of the rifle all the time.

Nice looking stocks, Quick.  I'm picking up an older Topper in 30-30 in a few weeks.  This one has an ugly blond stock on it but is only $125!  I'll need to find some nicer wood to put on it, maybe a youth butt stock for my Grandson.  Ain't all of this fun!  44 Man
