It doesn't help that, what 2 manufactures, are currently producing Whelen ammo.
I believe Norma and Remington are the only ones if I am not mistaken....and Norma's stuff, while of excellent quality, is hard to come by and pretty expensive.

Federal makes it available in the premium line with 225 grain bearclaws

All my brass is Remington Peters.  Once it has been shot in my custom bolt gun I reload it.  No problem in my Mauser with the factory RP and now no problem with my Handi.  At first the Handi would only shoot my reloads not the factory, now it shoot factory also after NEF fixed it.  Don't know what they did, but it worked.

Talked to NEF/CS they said the .35 barrels had been discontinued, and no more were availiable.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

sourdough

Did you by chance shoot the exact factory round successfully that would not shoot before HR fixed your barrel?  Wonder what was wrong that they were able to fix?

It looks like Federal has reconsidered. I have a Remington 700 Classic in .35 whelen, and have taken pigs, bear, moose and a bunch of deer with it.

That's good news, now if H&R will reconsider offering the 35 Whelen Handi again, many more people might be happy!! :D

I had misfires with my handloads(35 Whelen full length) as well using RCBS dies.  I'd recommend trying a different manufacturer's dies.  It seems that folks are having some problems with excessive run out, etc.  The guys at my local gun shop are all moving over to Hornady dies.  I decided to have Lee make me up a custom collet die set for my new 9.3x62. Only problem is a three month turn around time!

I had a problem with some new Rem brass that had the shoulder set back too much out of the bag which caused to much headspace, that was just 5 pieces out of the batch, the rest was fine. With the minimal shoulder of the Whelen, it doesn't take much variation in brass to cause a problem. All the rest of the Rem brass I've loaded has been fine, so they must have some QC problems. I fire formed those 5 pieces by loading hard into the lands using start loads. Once the brass is fire formed, then just set the sizing die up to maintain the brass to be flush with the barrel face as with any other Handi. ;)

That won't do much good if their supplier Sports South can't get one from H&R cuz they don't make it anymore!! ::)

they might be in stock.  if you look at the website, there is a greatly reduced listing of guns for sale which indicates they are removing items as they run out of stock.

You can check Sports South's inventory, they have no 35 Whelen Handis in stock. It's been discontinued, you might find one at an LGS somewhere or possibly on GB or one of the online gunstores, but you're SOL at Walmart. :'(

Anybody consider a Whelen AI to make headspacing more positive? You'd need to start with a .357 barrel to make a 35 Whelen AI, or you could make a 35-280 AI from a Whelen barrel, but that definitely would not fire any factory ammo. The rifling would be a little slower on the .357 barrel. I've got a .357 barrel, and H&R owes me another, so I suppose I should get out my chamber and reamer blueprints and see if I can make a Whelen AI with my 280AI reamer or if I'd have to order an x-06 AI reamer.
