I was wondering what if any hunters have taken more than one shot at to bag a deer. Do not include a shot you had to walk up and finish it off. Also do you use a wheel gun or a single shot.

I used two shots but the first one would have been enuff, 62 yards broadside I hit high (missjudged the range) took out both lungs but missed the heart, second shot was pretty much the same. Ruger GP 100 6" with 180 gr cast bullets.

Quit a few deer taken with my handguns, all one shot kills. I use mostly Revolvers, but have taken some with my Encore and contenders also.

4 deer 1 shot each. 3 with TC single shot and 1 with Freedom Arms revolver. None went more than 50yds. None shot farther than 60yds.

I have missed before and then had an opportunity to shoot again and then kill the deer.
By far most were one shot-one kill though.

All of my revolver game was with one shot also-FA 454 Casual.
On several elk (4 I think) I have put more than one shot into them-I keep shooting until they go down. With elk they can be dead and not even know it or at least act like it. Sometimes they don't hardly even react to a fatal bullet hit, even when the first one is right on the mark.

Three shots fired but using a handgun here has existed for just four years during regular season.
Ruger Vaquero, .45 Colt

First shot, straight on hit in the chest from high angle @ 37yds..Deer down in its tracks with half dollar size exit wound almost between the rear legs.

Second shot, Slipped the 250gr XTP in just behind the right shoulder@ 45yds.. bullet exits just in front of the left shoulder with the hole in the 3/4 diameter range. Deer appeared to have recieved a push upon the guns recoil. Deer runs app 29yds and is down & out.

Third shot, Straight on at 40yds..bunch of long white hair...one drop of blood despite two hr tracking..Just shaved it I guess, Just call me botch

19 Deer taken previously but all with .50cal Blkpowder rifle & patched ball.

My longest shot on a deer with a handgun was 165 paces. I had a good rest and knew the trajectory of that bullet. I use a 44 Ruger Super Blackhawk with a 10 1/5 inch barrel. I use the 300 grain Hornady XTP loaded out to the lower crimping groove. I have a 454 but I have shot 9 deer with the 44 and all were 1 shot kills. The 454 will be able to reach out a little longer.

I've killed fifty-two whitetail deer with my .309JDJ. None required a second shot if following your crieteria.

Wow, I don't think I have killed that many big game all together, little alone deer.
Sounds like you and that 309JDJ are pretty comfprtable together.

My furthest shot was 95 yards, direct hit on front shoulder of deer, Ruger 4 5/8" Blackhawk in 45 Colt with 250 grains cast with max charge of Unique, iron sights, deer dropped in its tracks, years of Bullseye competition prepared me for that shot.

Closest shot was 25 yards, double lung shot, S&W Model 29 5" in 44 mag with 210 grain Silvertips, max charge of Alliant 2400, Burris 1.1 x scope, deer ran 100 yards and tipped over dead, years of Bullseye competition prepared me for that shot.

Guess my experience has been similar to Redhawks. I'm not sure which I've used most, revolvers or Contenders but I've had all one-shot kills. I did hit a mulie a little far back once though, liver shot with the .30-30 Contender and a 150 gr. Nosler BT. Actually, it went and laid down to die but I didn't want to let it suffer long so I laid the Contender on a bump and put another behind its ear at 200 yds. That ended things. I used two shots but one would've done it.

I've used mostly that .30-30 with 150 gr. BT's and Hornady 130 gr.SSP's and a variety of .44's, some revolvers and quite a few in a Super 14 Contender. In .44's I've used some Sierra 240 gr. JHC's. They blew up pretty badly but never lost a deer. My favorite jacketed is the Speer 240 gr. Mag Soft Point. It does better than the Sierra, much better. But my favorite is a cast 240 gr. RNFPGC in a #2 alloy. It always penetrates. It kills well but without excessive damage. I'll take the cast bullet at 1600 FPS anyday.

Hit a doe at 65 yards, dropped like a rock, got back up so I hit her again. She didn't get up after that. Ruger super redhawk, 9 1/2" barrel, 44 mag.

I've never used my limit but zone L in Tennessee allows three does a day plus one buck per season. My deer all laugh at me when I'm going to work in the morning or pasture rubbernecking past legal hunting light. I could get over 100 deer per season, if I had deer in front of me while hunting that is. My wife has better luck with her car.

Got a relative that lives in Minnesota, has claimed 3 deer and one elk with cars. I'm still looking for my first Elk with a gun. Ya gotta play the lottery in Ky., but it's getting better.

I'm fairly new to handgunning for deer and have only taken 3 with my .357. All were within 20 yards, all went down after one shot. I knew when I started deer hunting with the .357 that it was only a close range backup to my M1917. I'm hoping with the .460 I can leave the long gun at home.

I have only hunted once (so far) for deer with a revolver. Ruger Super Redhawk .454, but using handloaded .45 Colt. My load was a Hornady 300 XTP going about 1150 fps.

It was a large 120# doe at 45 yards. The slug went in behind her left shoulder and exited behind her right shoulder. At the sound of the shot, she jumped into the brush, but went less than 20 yards before she lay down and gave up the ghost.

The 300 gr slug is probably overkill on whitetail, but my revolver has a definite preference for the heavier bullets. Two inch groups at 50 yards all day long with the 300 grain bullets (either cast or jacketed). Lighter bullets were all over the paper at 50 yards. I just got a new mold from Veral Smith of LBT which is the first 260 grainer that gives me comparable accuracy to the heavier bullets. It is a 260 grain WFN GC and at 1230 fps, it groups as well as the 300 grainers at 50 yards. I will probably use this on my next deer hunt.

My buddy beat me out last year. He got five deer and I got four. However, I shot mine and three of his he got with his truck. It cost him over 2,500 bucks for the repair. Now that is some expensive venison for sure!!!
