MKII Stainless 30-06 range report...no pics yet
« on: January 24, 2007, 08:39:40 PM »
Well i shot my 30-06 for the first time and was pleasently suprised. I shot 8 3shot groups at 100yds with PMC 180sp and Federal blue box 150SP. This was the cheapest ammo 9.00 a box for each. Worst group was 2in c-c with the Fed. Groups were

3/4in c-c 180gr
2in    c-c 150gr
1.5    c-c 180 gr
5/8    c-c 180gr
1/2    c-c 150gr This one is covered with a penny.

3 out of 5 are sub MOA with the cheapest factory ammo i could find. Im very happy with this especially considering i was actually heisitating buying a Ruger based on accuracy claims. I also probably should have but didnt clean between shots. I shot all  back to back. The 1/2 c-c is the smallest group ive ever shot with a sporter centerfire. Its  3/4 inch even measured outside to outside. Only paid 479 out the door NIB.

Mine will do 1/2" all day if I do my part. I bedded it and got a trigger job. My best load is 57.5grs H4350, Fed210 primers and 165gr HSPB.
Good shoot'n

Ruger's do tend to get a bad rap on accuracy and triggers. Have several myself and all are shooters. Triggers are easilly cleaned up .  Did 5 of mine in about an hour and a half. My best shooter is my 270wsm SS/lam that will hole for hole at 100 with fac 140 accubonds by Fed. My worst (if that's what you want to call it) is my 308 blue/Wal. , at under an inch with Fed. 165 BTSP.
Fed ammo, I have found to be very accurate, even the cheeper stuff. I shoot the 117 hotcores in my 25-06 TC pro hunter. At 9/16'' groups at 100 for 15.00 a box. Can't go wrong. Also deadlly on WT.

Good luck and weclome to the wide world of RUGER, DM

i'm glad you didn't let those poor accuracy claims keep you from one of 'todays' Rugers.    Ruger's been hammer-forging their own barrels for a while now; and they don't seem to have the slop in them that they used to (inconsistent diameters along the length of the bore.....).    i think they're some of the finest-made firearms that money can buy!

good shooting; good taste in firearms.

congratulations,

I have two MK2's - a blued/walnut in 30/06 and a stainless/synthetic in .350 Remington Mag. Both of them have Nikon Buckmaster 4.5x12x40 scopes and both are great shooters. I have never had an accuracy issue with a Ruger firearm. The factory triggers are not the best, but are easily replaced. I put Rifle Basix triggers in both of mine. My next rifle will be a Ruger Target in 22-250. I have heard that the two stage target triggers are good. I'm hoping that I won't have to replace it.

I agree they get a bad rap, I love my stainless 06 and I have several other calibers as well.

I am in the throes of either building a 35 Whelen or buying a Ruger stainless synthetic in 350 Remington magnum.  I hope the new stocks on them are much improved from the old canoe paddle style as I had one in 338 Winchester magnum and it kicked impressivly.

Glad to hear that.  I just bought one too but it has been to cold here to go to the range much.  I did go once to at least get it on paper after bore sighting it.  I have always had great luck with the many Ruger handguns I own.  This is my first Ruger centerfire rifle.

:-\

You won't be disappointed in the .350 Rem Mag. It's a kicker, but I added a Limbsaver pad and all is well.
