30-30 in a 32 winspl
« on: January 25, 2007, 04:59:19 AM »
Just wondering for discussion sake, Not that I would every try this but could you safley shoot a 30-30 catridge in a 32winspl Model 94.

I would imagine that you could and obviously lose accuracy but would this be dangerous to the shooter or the gun?

Thanks

No danger but the bullet would bounce down the bore and would probably go sideways through the target. The case would blow out to the 32 spl  configuration.

I would never recomend shooting any ammo in a gun its not intended to be shot in. Even in this case your just asking for trouble. gases could leak back before the case seals in the chamber or the bullet rattling down the bore could cause enough copper fouling to increase pressures when you shot the proper ammo in it. I just see no reason to do it!

I agree 100%. If you cannot get the proper ammo for it, leave it on the shelf. you are asking to loose the function of body parts.

True story:

My local gun club has open to the public sight-in days just before deer season, and I usually help out. One fellow shows up with his Uncles 30-30, and a couple of boxes of shells fresh from WalMart.

We start him at 50 yards, since he feels it will be close to sighted in already. He fires and nothing is on the paper, he tries again with the same results. I have him move to a different target that would allow more room up & down/side-side so we could maybe catch where this thing is. No joy.

We move him to 25 yards, and about 12" away from the bull, I see a hit. I tell him to shoot again, and another 12" away, I see another hole, this one is key-holed. I walk over and look at his Uncles 30-30...  you guessed it 32WS.  His story was his uncle told him it was a 30-30 and he didn't think twice about it - just went out and bought ammo.

The cases didn't split, but you would probably miss a deer as close as 25 yards away.

Take care,
Bob S.

I have fire formed factory loaded 308 amo into 358 many times with no ill affects. Like has been said don't expect much for accuracy. Dangerous no. You must stay with cartridges that are identical except for bore diamiter. and the bullet must be smaller than the bore diamiter. YOU CANNOT REVERSE THIS  AND TRY TO FIRE FORM 358's INTO 308. The older guys at the hunt camp were discussing this and I just wanted to get the real facts.  Like I said

Just for discussion sake.

Neither anyone in the hunt camp nor myself would ever consider doing this!

I remember an informal long range shoot (500 yards) at a gun club somewhere in the mid-west. One guy had several rifles around him and assorted boxes of ammunition within reach. He grabbed a Remington 700 .25-06, OK fine, but he then grabbed a box of .308 handloads and fired one through the .25-06. Fortunately he was not injured but the bolt had to be removed from the gun with a sledge hammer while the gun was being held in a padded vice.

I think this attests to the strength of the Remington 700 action.

He later offered to sell me the .25-06 at a really good price.

I decided to pass.

a friend of mine did the same thing but with a pre-64 winchester .264 win mag. the  claw extracter  held the .308 round against the bolt face. Blew the gun up, if it hadn't been for his SAFETY GLASSES, he would have lost is right eye, looked like he took a punche in the eye from a heavy weight boxer. worst bruised face I have ever seen. No, I wasn't there. Saw him later that week.  Developed a serious flinch after that he did.

A guy in my club showed up with his Marlin  30-30 for a match.  Ready, aim, fire--it sounded funny; no hit on the paper..............he accidentally took his Marlin 375.  Brass expanded to .375 and no harm done.
