Now that the 150s are gone
« on: January 25, 2007, 09:06:05 AM »
The 150 gr. bullets are almost gone and I've got 125 gr. HP for my 30-30.  ;D I'm figuring that with a little more velocity, the 125s should give me real good 150 yd rifle for deer. The velocity that I'm going for is a little over 2600 fps. Hopefully, this will be a easy transition and a good decision! What do you think?

I have some factory federals with 125g hp.
Shoot great in 336.
Helps with kick to.
No kills with them yet though. Dang!

The 150 gr. bullets are almost gone and I've got 125 gr. HP for my 30-30.  The velocity that I'm going for is a little over 2600 fps

After having dealt with several 30-30 handi's as well as 30-30 Toppers, it appears to me that each one was/is a little different in chamber size and bore size. Thus when working up loads for these rifles, it is difficult to name a starting and cut-off point for propellant charges. Back in the days when both me and my hunting buddy had the toppers and now he has a handi (I sold mine) we had as much as three grains difference to reach the same velocity.

We have reached 2600 ft per second with the Barnes X bullets in 130 and the 2700 fps is possible from the handi. From what we could tell getting that out of the older toppers is harder to do. We did this with W748 propellant and magnum primers with RP or WW cases.
