I'm no 'holic ...
« on: January 25, 2007, 09:38:31 AM »
I do not qualify for your Handiholic club at the moment because I only have two. I know this will probably make me an outcast here with only two Handi rifles but I sure like the two I have. Both rifles are in .223 ... one with a HB and the other a Bumble Bee stocked regular barrel with a 4-12x Swift Scope. I just took off a Mueller Eradicator off the HB Handi and will be replacing it with a 2-7x 35mm Burris Ballistic Plex. I will take this one coyote hunting. This rifle has shot quite a few groups under 1/2 MOA with 50gr Nosler BT with Varget. I haven't shot the Bumble Bee much yet but have shot some sub-MOA groups with 50gr Vmax.

Future plans call for a 45/70 and a 30-30 rifle as I would rather just buy the whole setup. The 45/70 might be a BC as I think that rifle looks too good to pass on.

I wouldn't say you aren't a 'Holic yet, I think you are just as infected as most of us, and you certainly aren't an outcast by any stretch of the imagination!! ;) The fact that you're considering more Handis tells us that you are indeed one of us, just not totally gone bonkers like some of us ::), you're showing amazing restraint and control!! ;)

btw, I didn't care for the Bumble Bee stock when I first saw it, but the more I look at yours, the more it grows on me, I may have to get one some day if I get the opportunity. ;)

Can you believe that about 3 or 4 years ago I passed on a new Pardner 12 ga with a Bumble Bee stock for $49?  Yep!  Galyans Sporting Goods had one discounted.  I'll bet it was there for better than 6 months.  I recall asking the saleman after it was sold, who would have wanted that ugly thing.

Now I want one.  Go figure.

You guys are soooooo funny. Denial? Me? No way .... well, I am thinking (and I cannot stop) about a 45/70. Even though I have quite a few bolt actions, shotguns, and revolvers, it is the 45/70 that interests me the most at this time. My favorite caliber is the .45 colt (or long colt) as I have it in a Marlin Cowboy Competition rifle and three revolvers. The .45 colt and the 45/70 both came out in the same year ... 1873. Now that is pretty cool and since I like six shooters and lever actions, a 45/70 BC seems to be a natural fit for me. Do I sound like I need another rifle? You bet I do.

The .223 Bumble Bee rifle was traded in (at my friend's gunshop) by a man whose wife (he bought it for her) got tired of it and wanted a .38 revolver. He had the trigger all slicked out and it was in new condition. The gunshop owner tells me about it as he knew I had just bought the other .223 a month or two before. Anyway, just like you guys, I told him it was the ugliest rifle I had ever seen. In short time, I walked out the shop with it. I'm glad I did.

Good shooting to all ....

You have to have a 45/70....so much fun... especially if you reload....I do mine with a $20 lee loader and haven't had to full length size the brass yet..

Bigjeep,
You gotta have the 45/70. I have the BC and the 22" barrel. OH. I also have a ruger #3 in 45/70. They are a hoot! Can't wait for the 45LC from NEF. OH Buddy, can't you just feel it.

Just shoot a Ruger No.1 or a Browning / Winchester high wall.
You will never look at a break open the same way..

Well, I don't know about that.
I have the Browning in 45 Long Colt and the Ruger #3 in 45/70 and for the money I could have lots of Nefs. Wait, I have 12 Nef/H&R barrels and 4 receivers for about the same price as the Browning and the Ruger. They are in a different league, there not even break opens.

Your absolutely right...Since both of those are falling blocks... :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D...I have yet to find any single shot as accurate as my Handi's...and while I may be PO'd at the Corporate of Marlin...I still will shoot and enjoy my Handi rifles...I know...I know...this flys in the face of all of the crudgens of the past bashing these little rifles for all of their faults and of their misgivings of spending so little on them...And...It doesn't make any sense why I would spend a plug nickel on one that has so many disadvantages with it's problematic lock up...non-fitting wood stocks...sloppy fitting synthetic stocks..over sized chambers/bores/long throats/crappy crowns/uneven and thin bluing/rattling actions/mis-aligned sites/cartridges getting stuck in the chamber and.....(Wait a minute.... I'm describing every Winchester lever gun I've owned...not my Handi's...never mind :-[ ) :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Mac ...

I had a Winchester lever action  .... once! I know people (including one of my brothers) who own them and love them. But when I bought my first Marlin in .45 colt, the Winchester was traded the next day on a .45 colt Vaquero.

You know this is kinda like when talking about food .. you get hungry. Talking about guns .. well, I'm getting hungry for another one. Gotta go ... I need some coffee and breakfest.

bigjeepman (and anyone else who is unsure of their diagnosis) here is a short but pithy exerpt from "What is a Handiholic?":

The possession and use of this firearm (Handi) triggers a deep, and as yet unexplained response in certain individuals which results in a strong desire for the regular acquisition of more of them.... the term ‘Handiholic’ will be applied to those who find themselves unable to resist multiple acquisitions of this family of firearms. Further reflection on the subject can be found at http://www.handiholic.com/Miscellany.html

If it walks like a 'holic, talks like a 'holic, posts like a 'holic, and acquires like a 'holic, not to mention drools like a 'holic...  ::) ::) ::) ... especially when it comes to drooling over a specific caliber (wipe it off the gun before you put it away) :P ... what other conclusion is possible? The good new is you may not be in actual denial, you may simply be unaware of the definition.

My conclusion: By any reasonable definition: YOU IS ONE MY LAD! ;D

And for the record, it ain't about the numbers - because, other than a couple of frames and stocks, and my kids' Sportsters, I am currently Handiless (though one should be on it's way to me next week) and though I am temporarily Handi free, I am not  symptom free, and don't expect I ever will be.

Cheers

Dios mio !!!

What command of the English language. I am totally impressed but now that I know who I am and what I am afflicted with ... well, I'm going to need counseling. So everyday (hopefully) from this day forward, I will seek professional guidance from the qualified doctors at GBO. The only counseling I was ever involved with before ended abruptly when the doctor told me to get off of his couch so he could lie down as he was having suicidal thoughts. To this day I'm not sure what I said but he did mention Sigmund Freud.

Siempre Handi's !!!

Not to start anything here, bigjeepman (can I call you bjm for short?) but I disagree about the "need" for counselling... and you ain't likely to get it here anyway!  ;)

What you need, and what you are gonna get if you hang around here, is support and encouragement! Much better for ya than counselling, and a whole lot easier to use (however it ain't paid for by any health insurance :( I've ever heard of. )

On the other hand, if you insist on seeking help to deal with your 'holic - ness, please contact me. That is the kind of work I do when I am not creating handiholic websites, or hanging around GBO. I've never worked with a handiholic before, nor any other kind of gun-a-holic, with the idea of breakin' them away. That may be a challenge... but I am up to such a challenge and willing to give it a try. Besides, there is always the possibility that they might pay my fee with Handis if I am successful!   ;D

On the other hand I know I can help you begin to accept the reality of your condition, and with a little work on your part, even relish it.

Cheers

First of all ... no one ever "high jacks one of my threads." By that, I mean you speak your mind and say what you need/want to say ... it is not going to bother me one bit. I really enjoy reading many points of view and the humor that goes with it. You continue to enjoy yourself here and say what you please ... okay?

Not sure where that username came from ... whatever ...

I think you might have misunderstood my intentions. I would never seek professional advice whose end goal would be to slow/stop my love for collecting/shooting/reloading. I was only seeking counseling to help me to better understand that it's okay to be a sick monkey for firearms. I'm getting hungry again ... later.

Question ... does anyone make yellow colored scopes?

Gunstocks Inc is probably the only place to get the gray lams any more, unless they show up on ebay or H&R decides to make some more of em.

I certainly don't see Handi acquisitions as a problem, and I definitely don't get the impression you want to give 'em up.
