.35 Remington Bullet Expansion/Penetration Tests

Interesting link to  illustrated study of .35 Remington bullet performance inlcluding factory ammo (Remington, Winchester, Federal)  as well as hand loads including 180, 220 grain Speers, 150 and 200 Grain Remington, 200 grain Federal, 200 Grain Hornady and 200 grain Sierras.  He also tried the Nosler 225 Grain Ballistic Tip with surrprising results as well as some cast bullet loads.  Check it out.

I commend you for your effort with the oldie but goodie 35 Rem.  I am considering getting back into 35 after a few years away based on hunting conditions I have run into after moving to a new location.  I would really like a 358 Win but can't go with a Browning lever.  I find them to be poor guns - not worth the high price tag ( Thet is my own personal opinion based an a really bad exeprience).  I have owned a whelan but it is too much of a good thing.  the 350 Rem Mag is in the same range of performance as the Whelan.  So it is back to the 35.  The first one I had was a Model 14 pump and if I could find one in very good sahpe I would get another but they are all getting very old.  so a new 336 is probably where I am going.  Up to 200 yardsa it does the job very well.

My all time favorite deer gun in the Maine woods was my mid 50's vintage Marlin 336 in .35 Remington shooting the old 250(?) grain Winchester-Western Silvertips. I am currently in the throws of having an extra .357 Mag H&R/NEF Handi Rifle barrel rechambered for my favorite deer caliber. the .35 Remington. Over all these years I have found out that my deer are shot with one good shot, and if it's not a good shot I don't take it. This .35 Remington Handi rifle will be just that, handy. It will also be light and compact with a good punch and only moderate recoil. A great gun to carry all day in the thick woods....<><.... :)

I'm getting bitten by the .35 cal bug, esp.  in the form of an 18" 336 in . 35 Remington. Stopped into one of the few remaining gunshops left in metropolitan Southern California and asked if they had any .35 Rem ammo??  They said they'd never heard of it, although they would be willing to special order me a Marlin 336 in .35 cali if i wanted one. 

I checked on ebay and there's plenty of .35 Rem brass as well as other components. Ii'm not sure what I would do with a .35 Remington because I do all my deer hunting with a .270 Win, but it seems like a fun gun.    Increasingly, I am drawn to short barreled (i.e. under 20") lever action rifles.   It is an intriging concept, even if it has no application in the kind of open country mule deer hunting that I most often do.

Last time I looked Wal mart sold 35 Rem ammo, worth a look.

If you want a 358 lever action I find the BLR to be an excellent choice. Mine, made in 1976 is a flawless performer. A MOA shooter with the Hornady 200 grain spire points and two different powders. The barrel is as smooth on the inside as is possible to attain, I have never handled a lever action that cycled as easily or smoothly as this one. The trigger is also good enough for any use though travel is a bit long.  I have seen one of these rifles damaged by a hot reload that stuck in the chamber and rather than tapping the stuck case out with a cleaning rod the fool stupidly beat the lever back with a chunk of 2x4 damaging the bushing the pivot gear rides on. I can't blame this on the rifle though.

I have two .350s, and two .35 Whelens, one .35 Remington.  I use the .350s and the Whelens here at home.  The .35 Remington I don't consider adiquate for hunting in Alaska so I leave it down in Tennessee where it is a good Whitetail gun, along with my 30-30.

I use to have an XP100 in 35 Rem. that shot great with hot loads. I kept loading hotter and hotter, in one powder 10 grains over the published max. The 35 Rem gets a bad reputation as a weak cartridge because of the type of guns it was chambered in. Pump and lever actions that had to use lighter loads due to them not being as strong as bolt action. If you load it up to the same pressures as the .358 it gets very close.
BTY if you neck it down to .22 you geta case almost identicial to the 22-250.

I do have a .35 Remington barrel for my Contender, but I put it away years ago since I was very dissatisfied with the performance of the bullets that were availiable then.  Now that Nosler has the Ballistic Tip, I think I will get it out and give it another go.

Strut64 sorry you had a bad experience with the BLR , 99% of the people i have spoken with spoke very highly of the BLR. The lightweight 81 in 358 cought my eye as i wanted something i could carry all day long for deer bear and moose. Two trips to the range and i have had no problems and i must say i have never seen a smoother action in a lever action rifle before. With a 20" i am getting 1 1/2" groups at 100 yds with the factory 200 silvertyips.If you want to try the 358 but not in the browning , Ruger 's new M 77 Hawkeye bolt action comes in 358 winchester.
