I made my own longbow
« on: January 26, 2007, 04:38:41 PM »
Having only shot recurves and compounds in the past I wanted to give a longbow a try. so instead of buying one I decided to make it..Well I actually made 5 and I have one survivor  ::) Here are some pics..it pulls 52# @ 28" and is made of Ipe' w/ a hickory backing - Kevin
It shoots great by the way and I plan to take it on my last deer hunt of the year next weekend

Glue up

Roughing out the handle

First stages of tillering

Glueing nock overlays

Finished nocks

Completed bow

One of the bows that didn't make it

Nice work Slinger.  I like the handle.  It looks very much like one I made about ten years ago (the shape of the handle and the shelf cutout).  Only difference was I backed mine with clear fiberglass laminations.  It pulls about 60 to 62 lbs. at 30 inch draw (I have fairly long arms).  One thing I did note was that it easily outpenetrates my brother-in-laws Bear compound bow which is set at about 55 lbs. (those longer heavier arrows carry alot of momentum).

I was just wondering if you ended up shooting a deer before the season ended with that new bow?

Nice bow. I've started working on a piece of hickory with a white oak backed handle. I hope it turns out. This is my first attempt at any kind of bow building. I got plans and blueprints in the mail the other day for a laminated recurve. It sure seems like its going to be a lot of fun to try to build one of these.

Real nice work 45gunslinger. Excellent tiller! I think these bows are as much fun to build as they are to shoot. I've been makin my own longbows also these past years. I've tried some different woods but stick to oak for most, don't have much in mech tools use mostly draw knife, wood rasp and scraper its a good hobby. Keep up the good work! scout4<><

That looks great!  I have not had a chance to start mine yet will probably be a fall/winter project now.

Thanks for the comments.. I Keep putting off a new R/D longbow build ..to many choices of wood  ???...I still haven't anchored anything with this bow. I'm considering turkey hunting w/it this season. The fiberglass lam really did the trick the bow has no set whatsoever and still draws 70# +   - Kevin
