Right where they're shown on H&R's web site. ;)

The open sights on my new 500 Smith are plastic and came right off.. Waiting on a scope base now but will be shopping for rings and a scope this weekend. The scope mount plug screws look like plastic also and I tried to screw them into the sight mounting holes to fill them but they don't seem to want to go in, probably lock tight in them. Anyone know the screw size so I could get some steel plug screws?  Maybe they are standard like on most US guns, I might have some somewhere?

Mc, the current iron sights are reported to be their old proprietary sights which are those shown on the one in the H&R pic, they were using plastic sights and Williams WGOS and now have gone back to the old style like this, the elevator adjustment screw is loose on it since it's not installed.

None of those are like the carbine sights, it's a different style with a stepped leaf elevator, I believe.

Sight mount screws on my .500S&W are 6-48 as near as I can tell, they should be the same as the scope mount holes.

These are the same sights as on the Tracker Barrels.  One Ragged Hole makes a kit fro $25 that comes with 2 blades of different size holes for these sights.  Nearly turns it into a peep sight.  I have found that I need to raise the rear sight quite a bit to get sighted in.  If I take some off the front blade then I wouldn't have to raise the rear sight so high...RIGHT??

thats correct    by lowering the front sight you will raise the point of aim        but go slow and remove very little at a time     it doesn't take as much as you might think.    the method used by the muzzleloader shooters is     "file a little, shoot a lot "

since they have gone back to their older sights, does this mean that a WGOS will not fit?  Will the bead front sight the that they have been using fit?  I am looking to buy one of these rifles today and I don't expect that I will really like that rear sight and front blade...

I think the older proprietory H&R sights with the blade front sight were great, stong, easy to adjust, and held there set position great. They were made of steel and probably more expensive to produce with more parts. If you can find a gun with a set try them I think you will be pleasantly surprised. I am sure H&R went to newer sights for the simple reason of economics, not because they work better, it does seem they do not make changes to better the product but to save money, usually lessening the quality until there is such an uproar something has to give, as the plastic sight fiasco. So, to get off my soapbox, try an older set of sights, you may like them. The newer aluminum Williams sights are nice but they sit very high and I feel the front sight bead is quite delicate and am a bit worried of bending or breaking the bead off when "bushwacking" through the thick stuff....<><.... :)

If you would quit using your rifle for a machete... ;)

I really like the semi-buckhorn/bead sights that came on my 44 mag handi--a brass bead would be better but a dab of white paint works good too.

This "semi-buckhorn/bead" is what I've halfway got on my new 45-70.  The rear is the Williams, but the front sight is the blocky H&R front sight, which is difficult to get a good sight picture with.  I have contacted H&R customer service, but if they no longer have this front sight, what is my next best alternative?

Thanks.
Don

My latest 45/70 is a 2007 manufacture judging by the serial number and it has the aluminum sights such as pictured in Tim's posting. They are quite sturdy and accurate to boot.I don't see how in any normal hunting situation one might break them off.
