Handgun Owner Alert!
« on: January 27, 2007, 04:38:49 AM »
Here's a good reason to call your representatives in Washington!!!!!

NATIONAL RIGHT-TO-CARRY BILL INTRODUCED

U.S. Senator John Thune (R-S.D.) recently introduced S. 388--the Senate version of H.R. 226, a national Right-to-Carry reciprocity bill that would provide national reciprocity for state carry licensees.  This legislation would allow any person with a valid carry permit or license issued by a state to carry a concealed firearm in any other state if they meet certain criteria.  The bill would not create a federal licensing system; it would simply require the states to recognize each other's carry permits, just as they recognize drivers' licenses.

U.S. Representative Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) recently introduced H.R. 4547--a national Right-to-Carry (RTC) reciprocity bill that would provide national reciprocity for state carry licensees.  The bill would allow any person with a valid carry permit or license issued by a state to carry a concealed firearm in any other state if they meet certain criteria.  The bill would not create a federal licensing system; it would simply require the states to recognize each others' carry permits, just as they recognize drivers' licenses.

For more information on the bill, please visit www.nraila.org/Issues/FactSheets/Read.aspx?ID=189.

Please be sure to contact your U.S. Representative at (202) 225-3121, and urge him or her to cosponsor and support H.R. 4547!

Quote
The Stearns/Boucher Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Bill

H.R. 226, introduced by U.S. Representatives Cliff Stearns’ (R-Fla.) and Rich Boucher (D-Va.), would allow any person with a valid concealed firearm carrying permit or license, issued by a state, to carry a concealed firearm in any state, as follows: In states that issue concealed firearm permits, a state’s laws governing where concealed firearms may be carried would apply within its borders. In states that do not issue carry permits, a federal "bright-line" standard would permit carrying in places other than police stations; courthouses; public polling places; meetings of state, county, or municipal governing bodies; schools; passenger areas of airports; and certain other locations. The bill applies to D.C., Puerto Rico and U.S. territories. It would not create a federal licensing system; it would require the states to recognize each others’ carry permits, just as they recognize drivers’ licenses and carry permits held by armored car guards. Rep. Stearns has introduced such legislation since 1995.

• Today, 48 states have laws permitting concealed carry, in some circumstances. Forty states, accounting for two-thirds of the U.S. population, have RTC laws. Thirty-six have "shall issue" permit laws (including Alaska, which also allows carrying without a permit), three have fairly administered "discretionary issue" permit laws, and Vermont (and Alaska) allow carrying without a permit. (Eight states have restrictive discretionary issue laws.) Most RTC states have adopted their laws in the last decade.

• Citizens with carry permits are more law-abiding than the general public. Only 0.01% of nearly 1.2 million permits issued by Florida have been revoked because of firearm crimes by permit holders. Similarly low percentages of permits have been revoked in Texas, Virginia, and other RTC states that keep such statistics. RTC is widely supported by law enforcement officials and groups.

• States with RTC laws have lower violent crime rates. On average, 22% lower total violent crime, 30% lower murder, 46% lower robbery, and 12% lower aggravated assault, compared to the rest of the country. The seven states with the lowest violent crime rates are RTC states. (Data: FBI.)

• Crime declines in states with RTC laws. Since adopting RTC in 1987, Florida’s total violent crime and murder rates have dropped 32% and 58%, respectively. Texas’ violent crime and murder rates have dropped 20% and 31%, respectively, since its 1996 RTC law. (Data: FBI.)

• The right of self-defense is fundamental, and has been recognized in law for centuries. The Declaration of Independence asserts that "life" is among the unalienable rights of all people. The Second Amendment guarantees the right of the people to keep and bear arms for "security."

• The laws of all states and constitutions of most states recognize the right to use force in self-defense. The Supreme Court has stated that a person "may repel force by force" in self-defense, and is "entitled to stand his ground and meet any attack made upon him with a deadly weapon, in such a way and with such force" as needed to prevent "great bodily injury or death." (Beard v. U.S., 1895)

• Congress affirmed the right to guns for "protective purposes" in the Gun Control Act (1968) and Firearm Owners’ Protection Act (1986). In 1982, the Senate Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on the Constitution described the right to arms as "a right of the individual citizen to privately possess and carry in a peaceful manner firearms and similar arms."

The people that put the Democrats in power killed any chance of those bills being passed.  I don't care if a gazillion letters are written in support of them.  The Democratic leaders are so rabidly antigun that the only way they would even let it come to a vote is if they absolutely know that they have the votes to defeat them.

That does not mean we have to give up without a fight. If everyone takes this attitude we will loose for sure.

I am almost scared to post this but the only way they will change their minds if they are involved in a life or death situation in which they needed the use of deadly force and they didnt have it. A true life experience will change your point of veiw.
I was a LEO and I know what it is like to have to rely on that pistol or revolver (as I originally carried ) in order to secure your safety.

But REDHAWK1 you are right we should never give up we need to push on and push on till it is accomplished I am so glad that the early Americans didnt give up or this more than likely would the the british republic of the Americas .Instead it is the United States of America and we are proud of it and we should stand up for it. And support freedoms  and this is good .

I don't like making polictical statements BUT you're right, with the people that someone voted into office we are in big TROUBLE. With all the shooters, hunters, collectors & sportsmen we have in this country this should not be happening. Look at all the people we know that don't belong to the NRA. Look at all these people we know that don't get out and vote. I'm only one person but I do belong to the NRA and I do vote and yes I do have a right to bitch when these people get voted in.  WHAT ABOUT YOU.  ( There I got that off my chest ) :) :) :)

Why anyone who wants to own a gun would ever vote for a Democrap is beyond me. Even if they start out pro-gun, they will usually vote with their party.

recently in my county in New York the local liberal newspaper here published the names of all the licensed pistol owners-me included. Their reason was that their neighbors should be aware that the guy next door has a pistol. I wrote to the paper about why they don't publish the names of all former felons-I never got a reply. Now they put my family in jeopardy of some gangster breaking in the house to get my handgun.

I'd like to know just when and who took the basic principal of democracy away with the vote? I neither believe in the Democratic or Republican party. I've been working a lot of hours lately but, haven't see Bush say or do anything about $4@ gallon gas, yet. I don't think it matters who is currently in the white house. If we get someone who is willing to vote pro gun, they won't vote pro labor but are willing to raise taxes. I'd also like to see a NO CONFIDENCE (a none of the above) option  on all ballots, and a term limits on all public offices. This from a current election judge.
Maybe we need to include a perjury penalty in the oath of office for all politicians, for their indiscretion during campaigning and stop all the mud slinging during campaigning?
While I'm dreaming, I'd like to be able to legally sue any politician for not keeping his or her promises while running for office, and take their war chest away from them? ie: Hillary, Nancy, Diane and Teddy. Let's hurt them in their pocket book and see how they like being on unemployment.

Rant mode off. I'm going to do some deep breathing exercisers, now.

Your right on S.B. The reason this bill won't get through isn't because of the liberals in congress, it's because it doesn't benefit either party. This country has been bought and sold already and what most people don't understand that the politicians don't work for  average Americans they work for corporations.

1marty - take out a full page add in the newspaper listing the names, addresses and home telephone numbers of everyone who works for that paper, then get the names of any level sex offenders on the local list and add them to the list as well and add the names of those recently arrested for any crime (local police logs), and let the citizenry decide for itself.

I know that in nys a lot of idiots get away with a lot of 'non-crime' type stuff.  Maybe it's time we should do the same.  Mikey.

Article IV
Sect. 1. Full faith and credit shall be given in each State to the public act, records, and judicial proceedings of every other State.  And the Congress may, by general laws, prescribe the manner in which such acts, records, and proceedings shall be proved, and the effect thereof.

I don't understand why Congressional authorization is required to exercise a part of the Constitution. If two queers get "married" in Mass. every other state has to recognize the marriage licence.

Some good ideas here. Why doesn't the NRA take some of these thoughts and act on them? They could spend some of the monies that are spent sending me insurance and other advertisements. And to answer the question before it's asked, YES, I am a life member.
This country needs a working man president.

Not another rich socialite money hungry lawyer type candidate!

If we're paying politicians to run this country, why do they spend half of their tenure running for offioce again instead of their job? How long would you keep your job doing this?
Bring back the middle class working people! We were the only ones who payed our taxes anyway.

There have been a number of pro-gun democrats elected from red states.  It might be surprising to hear that Schumer orchestrated some of this -- until you realize that a democratic majority implies senior democrats get to take over all the most important committee chairs... as well as positions such as speaker of the house.

Now this is a real shame, because some of those pro-gun democrats are decent people who sincerely want to represent their constituency and who are sincerely pro-gun.  Zell Miller was a pro-gun democrat from Georgia, and was an invited keynote speaker at one of the NRA annual conventions.  I recall an interview of whether he would defect to the republicans around the time that Jeffords defected.  Zell said he wouldn't -- being democratic in GA means something very different than that in MA, NY, or CA.  Something about their good-ole boys he grew up with in his political career...  but when it came to the head count putting Kennedy et al into the chairmanship positions, what GA good-ole-boys feel about guns doesn't get counted.

Yeah, these guys got elected, in part because a lot of the country was disaffected by a president that is lame-duck anyway.  Sort of like shooting yourself in the foot.  Coming from a red county that voted against Hillary, it is astounding that John Hall got elected from my district (used to be held by Sue Kelly).  Turns out that just one town had a huge impact -- maybe googling about the curious case of Kyrias Joel will lead you to an interesting read about just how local the politics that end up propelling folks like Pellosi to power can become.

I can't help but wonder if a substantial part of the rationale for the second A. was to allow the people arms to protect themselves from the government i.e. politicians.   AND NOW (WE) SHEEP ALLOW POLITICIANS TO DEFINE & INFRINGE ON THAT RIGHT !??!!!  We are all fools.

Sorry S.B.  I start to go wild inside as I realize that the day we have to protect our rights from the government is VERY close, possibly within a couple years.  That will be "poop or get off the pot" day for people on this forum and others.  It'll look like "Red Dawn" but the storm troopers will wear a U.S. flag on their arms, and the "pockets" of resistance will be small enough to fit in my shirt pocket.

I believe Sen. Feinstein  and other Democrats have said that want all gun ownership to be illegal (in those words or others).  I'm not so naive as to believe it won't happen, especially since we Americans no longer have representation in government.

I believe this is EXACTLY why the founding father's gave us the 2nd A.

Note that despite my cynicism I DID write Sen. Kohl regarding s.388.

well, i guess i can live with $4 a gallon gas, i sure know i could live without "labor" as it is nowadays.  i know we couldn't "live" without a second amendment.  so i guess it sure does matter who's in office.

this quote pretty much sums it up.

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government.
It can only exist until the voters discover they can vote
themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment
on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the
most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a
democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, followed by
a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest
civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed
through this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; From
spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From
liberty to abundance; From abundance to selfishness; From selfishness
to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage."
-- Alexander Fraser Tyler (later Lord Alexander Fraser Woodhouslee), in
"The Decline and Fall of the Athenian Republic", published - 1776

btw, superredhawk -- you got it right on fighting and not giving up.  my emails are sent, though my texas senators already support it.
