308 handi

OK,I'm thinking of getting a Handi in 308 winchester, but I 've seen a few members here that are having troubles getting them to shoot well. What kind of groups are you guys getting, and are you happy with the 308?I've had one for years in a bolt action, but the handi would make a dandy gun for deer tree stand.Reading some of Macs post, and he has almost got me sold on a 280,and most who have them say they shoot good.

The 308 heavy barrel I just sold shot real well with 150 grainers

Just wanted a lighter barrel in 30-30 is all ::)

My heavy 308 bull barrel does shoot best with 2 factory loads...The 167 grain Federal Match which I shot in the first postal match here at a little bit over 1/2" groups...and with the 150 grain Winchester power points just a hair under 1/2" groups....I never could find a hand load that would equal either of these two in that particular barrel..and this was with just about every bullet and powder available at that time..The 308 is a good round...but..I won't recommend one in a Handi...This is just me...others can and have had different luck with theirs.....

The 280...well that is another story...and would say this would be my first recommendation to anyone wanting another barrel..The 45-70/25-06/heavy 24" bull barrel 243 would be my other choices...Once Quickdtoo gets some range time with his improved 280...I think many others will be leaning this way too...

I've had two 308 Handi's (1 standard & 1 ultra) and couldn't get either one to group much better than 2" at 100 yards. That's still minute of deer groups but not good enough for me. My 45/70 on the other hand shoots cloverleafs if I do my part. I just got a 25/06 barrel but haven't shot it yet.  From what I've seen on here you can't go wrong with a 25/06, 280, or 45/70.
