Bent Cantilever on 870
« on: January 27, 2007, 12:29:37 PM »
Hi Guys...does any one know what material the cantilevers are made of..isn't steel thats for sure. Magnesium maybe? I'm thinking of trying to straighten it for a back-up?? Also, do I have to go to Remington for a replacement? Haven't found any suppliers that show that kind of thing. Thanks in advance, Ken

Sounds like there might be an interesting story behind the bent cantilever, would you mind sharing it?

I suspect the cantilever mounting arm is in fact steel. Magnesium has little ductility and tends to fracture when deformed by a significant amount. I had an Ithaca aftermarket slug barrel that broke the solder weld when I was sighting it in. Ithaca had gone under and I could not get the store to do an exchange since it was past 3 months when I had purchased it. Anyways, a smith friend of mine was able to re-solder the arm to the barrel and it has since proven to be a good shooter.

You'll likely need to send it back to Remy since the cantliever arms do not seem to be a common replacement item. A bit more tricky would be to have a trusted smith work on it and try to rebend the arm but it could be an issue getting the alignment set properly. Depending on price for repair, you may just want to get a new barrel.

A story...you bet there was...short and sweet...I've got a nice 8 point commin' straight at me from behind. The tree is between me and him, he's walking with his head down...I've decided I'll be able to take him with pistol so as he comes around my blind side...I slowly ease my 870 to my hangin' peg but it gets caught on my glove and falls 20" to the ground and of course spooks my BIG. I'm seen this buck  a few times on the front of our property but NEVER duing light. Needless to say the gun fell on a branch at the base of my tree...directly on the scope...SCOPE took it just fine......

Thanks for the info...if it breaks when I try to staighten it , I''ll cut it, drill it and use it as a base for one of my Handis!
