28 ga.

What is the range for a 28 ga on tree rats and rabbits? And what size shot and brand of ammo are you useing? I am going to get one in a pardner and want to know what to expect from it. It is a modified choke.

Shotgun range is shotgun range. 28's shoot at the same velocity as a 12's, you just don't have the same amount of lead. Remington Express 28ga shoots 3/4oz at 1295 fps, Remington Express 12ga shoots 1 1/4oz loads at 1300 fps. 3/4oz of #6 (that's what I'd shoot at rabbits and squirrels) 135 pellets, 1 1/4oz of #6 281 pellets. A pellet from a 28ga is as effective as A pellet from a 12ga. What's your effective range?
Folks mistakenly tend to use "rifle" rationale with shotguns, bigger doesn't mean more power, just more lead.
BTW, I prefer Remington ammo for the 28. !oz loads are available in other brands, but I understand that they don't pattern very well and haven't tried them.

I really wish I would not keep seeing "28" in posts on this site. Not only that after I see that
number there are usually good things written about them. I am getting the urge to get one!
I think it is seeing it so many times with good reports that might br doing me in....<><.... :D

Hey, MSP.  I know you have places where you get your NEF's from up there, but if you should get an overwhelming urge to have a 28 ga and cannot locate one, I was at two shops in PA yesterday and each had one on the shelf.   ;D

One more ? will the Gun stocks inc. Stocks fit the shot guns also or just the rifles? I really like the straight grip black and grey camo stocks and I know they would look good on a 28ga. or any other.

Thanks guys, for the info and for the encouragement. I will be trying to find out from the Walmart HQ and from Dicks sporting goods where the nearest store is to me and the price. I think they are about $114.95 at Wal Mart if I can find one close buy that still sells guns. I do not know what the price is a Dicks.....<><.... :)

I prefer the Rem 3/4 oz load too.  Rabbits, squirrels, grouse, etc all fold nicely when I do my part.  I do have the Winchester 1 oz loads too.  1200fps with the 1 oz load is not optimum IMHO.  They work but not as well as the Remingtons or my handloads.  I like to load 3/4 oz of #4s, great load.

i reload remington and AA 28 gauge husks with 3/4oz of #8's and they fold grouse up like accordians.

i would say that 30 yards is my limit for the 28 gauge (and most other gauges too) only because of my eyesight, i'll bet some kid with sharp eyes and a quick wit could do better.
