Take a look at Kershaw Whirlwind, and Blur. These have an assisted opening feature(one hand operation), and they come very sharp and with a little stone work mine are so sharp I can't believe it. I had a Whirlwind and lost it %#@&*$%@#! I bought the Blur to replace it, and it would be my choise of the two. The best prices are at Midsouth Shooters Supply.

You can get some Kershaw folders at the Wal-Mart sporting good counters too.  Benchmade also has some affordable folders available.  How much are you going to spend?

I carry a Buck pocket knife every day.  It's a skeletal framed folder that I bought at Gander mountain for about $30.  It isn't a fighting knife or anything like that, but it's a solid tool.  If you can find one, a Buck Crosslock is a great knife.

The only pocket clip type I carry anymore is the Spyderco Native in S-30V. It was $40.00 at Wal-Mart.  Had it over a year, and it just keeps going.  I just threw a Buck Rush into the trash...I wouldn't want anyone to end up with that one. The one Gerber I had, the AR 3.0, in 440A was decent and beautifully styled, but the blade snapped when I abused it just a trifle ;D.  I'm not personally acquainted with Kershaws or the others, so I can't comment beyond this.

I carry a Smith & Wesson extreme ops tactical knife. I got mine on Ebay for $18.00. It's a one hand opening operation, the knife is pretty sharp out of the box but with a little touch up you can get it wickly razor sharp. The blade is made out of 440C stainless steel the best material of the 440 series metal blades for knives. I have this knife for over a year now and use this knife for everything from cutting cardboards to carpets. Great knife for a great price!!!

I totally agree with Dave375. I have 2 Kershaws, one for a spare. A Ken Onion model and a Blur. The pocket clip and the speed assist open are priceless options. The 3.25 inch blades are adequate for everything. Handle one with the speed assist and you will know what I mean. They hold an edge very well.

Another vote for the Kershaw, I have carried one for about 5 years now and have been very satisfied with it.  It holds and edge well and is easy to sharpen.  It is the larger of the Ken Onion versions.  I have several way more expensive knives that I am not as pleased with.

I've been carrying a Cold Steel Medium Voyager Clip Point since way back in the late 80's/early 90's and love them.  I'm on my third one.  My first was Gov't issue for a little trip to... uh... El Salvador and I had to turn it back in. The second one I lost because the old style molded-in plastic pocket clip loosened up.  The third one with the new metal pocket clip is a terrific knife.

One hand opening with either hand, and AUS-8A steel.  The heat treatment is really good for a production knife and it is quite tough and holds up to a lot of abuse.  Takes and holds a good edge too.  It came from the factory hair-flingin' sharp and I keep it that way.  I've really surprised my work mates with some of the things I've done with this knife that didn't bother it a bit.

I was at a gun show last weekend and there was a guy there that had a booth where he sharpens knives.  He told me, in his opinion, that Cold Steel was one of the top three for quality of their blades for production knives.  This is from a guy that handles, works on, and sharpens dozens of knives a day.

The Cold Steel might cost a little more than others, but it is definitely worth it.

I've had a couple of Cold Steel knives, and they were all very good.  I've got a Large Voyager Clip Point in my pack right now.  Very nice, very sharp.

If your still in the market for a good value priced knife  the "red box" benchmades are hard to beat  I've got three of the monochrome liner locks one in my pocket  one for my truck and one in mh toolbox  good steel well made and at less than forty bucks apiece I odnt cry too long when I loose one.   just my opinion

I alway had junk knives and wanted a good knive once in my life. I must say the Spyderco Native in S-30V is great. I paid twice as must as $40 as that lucky gentleman did but; I would do it again. You must check it out.

Can you get the Native with a plain edge blade, or just the semi-serrated?

I have drawer full of knives that didn't cut for whatever reason or another----there are only 2 that I'll consider carrying anymore and I have mutliples of each.

1. Benchmade Griptilian----$55 to $70 on Ebay depending on how patient you are.

2. Spyderco Endura---$35 to $55---depending on handle material--features and patience on Ebay.

BTW---have several Kershaws--while OK sort of----let's just say I'm not a big fan and would steer you away from them.

Along with my Blacksmithing trade, I am also a dealer in fine cutlery, and some that are "worry free" while carrying..that is, low cost but still quite good.
Since I have many used ones to chose from, I usually carry to suit the occasion, and keep an old cigar box sized container full of carry folders in my study. For everyday carry I will usually carry a 4" Buck Creek stockman (carbon), a Victorinox "Swiss Champ" (a bit bulky)..for the last 3-4 days I have been carrying an old Ulster Scout knife (carbon).
For Sunday dress, it is either an ultra thin Queen "Senator", a very thin Victorinox "Pocket Pal", a Camillus yellow peanut or a Queen.. pearl handled pen knife..

In the woods I field dressed my deer last season with a  4&1/4" (closed) Buck with zytel type handles. It could as well have been my Frost (of Sweden) high carbon (non-folding) hunter.
For survival etc. I like the Ontario line..the Air Force survival, the Kraton handled "Quartermaster" etc.

My Grandson, a Spec Ops Marine..now on his second deployment in Al Anbar (Ramadi/Falujah areas) can vouch for the great versatility and toughness of the Ontario ASEK knife he was given by the Ontario Pres, before his first deployment . IMHO..Probably the best "all purpose" straight knife I've seen.

    www.ontarioknife.com

I really like the old high carbon knives and have a small "flock" of them I carry as the whim strikes me..some of these brands..
Utica, Ulster,Schrade, Robeson and various German brands such as Buchel, Otter,Herder, Senator & Swanwerks etc..many firms of which are no longer in existence.

BTW..Some excellent high carbon steel ..in low cost folders, check out the Opinels..
If you don't want the truth, don't ask me.  If you want something sugar coated...go eat a donut !  (anon)

Buck gets my vote on this one.  I've been thru several other brands until I settled on Buck.  I do a lot outside and I'm really hard on knives.  Don't know the model number but it's a 2 1/2" locking folder.  Good knife.  Takes and holds an edge really good.

I have about a jillion knives and alternate which ones I carry. However the knife that I always have on me is the Victorinox Explorer. It has the regular blades as well as a Magnifying glass that I have used to find and remove a million steel slivers at work. Right now I am carrying the Spiderco Pro Grip.
shot placement is everything.

Another vote for the Cold Steel Voyagers here. They're light and the backlock has never failed on mine.

I also carry a Swiss knife' like a farmer or fieldmaster. Very versatile.

I have used a Kershaw Ken Onion Leek with assisted opening for several years. It opens in a flash, and never fails to impress! Although I open boxes with it every day, and don't do much tough work with it, I have gutted a few deer with it when I forgot my primary hunting knife, and it performed very well. Great design, and affordable

i listed a bench made , but at a gun shop a couple days ago i picked up about 20 Schrade X timer 's  designed by Stewart A.Taylor , for $ 10.00 each , i give knives to some of the guys that work extra hard ! they lose them on the job so i don't invest alot , anyway this knife is a good deal  ! camo scales , sharp as a razor  , liner lock and pocket clip !

Kershaw Leek! Its a good knife, not too little, not too big. Assist makes it easy to use one handed. Very sharp and holds an edge.
