I carried a higher end Benchmade that I paid about $180.00 for, for about 10 years, until one day I laid it on an ice chest and a co worker walked off with it. I then bought a yellow handled Carl Schlieper, lock blade made in Solingen, Germany with the eye on the blade and handle, to replace it and carry it in a open leather sheath I made. It is carbon steel and will take a scary edge, and is a beautifully made and fitted knife.
I after reading this thread however, got out a Kershaw Ken Onion 1560 that I have really never carried and kept in my gun safe. I vaguely remember sharpening it to my taste and putting it up, not liking the pants clip on the same end of the hinge. It is, I must say a razor sharp blade, with a good feel, and I may start carrying it. It is for a fact much faster than the Schlieper blade with the having the assisted open on it, but is not the quality of the Schlieper, although I paid more for the Kershaw.

I carry a little Kershaw Rouge all the time except on airplanes. This is the 3rd one. Lost the other 2. Don't think they make em any more. Fantastic steel - never have seen such good steel before I got the first one. Takes me a while with a sharpening jig to get it right but once sharp it will stay that way for months as long as I don't abuse it. The first two I had were maybe another model but in the same series, they had 2 blades the Rogue only has 1 that's about 2 inches. I've even put it to work on moose and caribou. If I lose this one I'll shop for another Kershaw.  I usually also carry an old leatherman (original style?) on my belt for rough duty, feel naked without it.

Try a pair of pants with that belt, and you'll feel clothed regardless of whether you have the leatherman. ;D

My daily carry knife is a Gerber Air Ranger.
It is an Al sided knife.  Very slim.  I use it as a money clip.  I feel naked with out it.
I think I paid $50 for it.  Not sure if they still make it.
I am rough on knives.  I have had the Kershaw whirlwinds.  Both had to go back for new rubber bands.
I also had the small gerber Applegates the larger applegate with assisted (too big for pocket)
I worked for a boiler company and used my knife to take off screws, jimmy boiler doors, Jimmey equipment room doors (waiting for maintence guys some times is not an option) as well as opening envelopes, boxes of catalogs, and collecting old brass company logos off boilers that were being replaced (prized item to have on your desk at Raypak)  For a while I was getting a new knife about every 6 months to a year.  I have had the gerber in my pocket for about three years now.
I have bent the blade of the Gerber and just bent it back.  It has been dulled and sharpend may times and with a few minutes with just a steel It comes back really sharp and can be made shave quality with a little time on the diamond stones.

mcwwodduck! You are like my deceased Father. I would NEVER loan you a knife! ;D Dad bought good knives with at least 3 blades. That, I guess he figured gave him three chances to pry a hub cap off a car. I have some of his knives, and all had one blade left, with the rest broke off.

Har Har Har Dee!!! Actually I'd feel well dressed with a belt and the Leatherman. I used the leatherman to file my way thru a lock hasp on a wilderness cabin after the plane left and I found out I had the wrong keys. Done a number of other handy repairs with it too. Friend of mine here in town was featured in an ad where he fixed the landing gear on his Piper Navajo with a leatherman. The landing gear wouldn't descend for landing. The hand release broke. They flew around for a while burning off fuel and then he was able to grab enough of the broken release cable with the leatherman to get the gear down and locked in place.

You caught me off guard Dee, I'm still chuckling.

Yea, it was strictly in fun. I have leatherman that I have carried for years. It's now in my minimalist fanny pack in my Jeep, along with other things like a couple cans of smoked oysters.

I was starting to be a woodcarver years ago and found out I was always reaching in my pocket for a knife and messing up a sharp blade.  I went down and bought a Buck Lightning.  Worked so well one handed I went on Ebay and found a closeout source who sold me a dozen (US made) for under the price of a big name custom maker.  I admit I don't use them for screw drivers or, levers or wedges but they have held up well and I have long been to the point of not having to look to find, open, close use and put away.  Every time I think one is not sharp I set aside until I have 3-4 and then send to the factory for refurbish (not often and free) The carving jacks I carry are mostly high end carbon steel and I keep a surgical edge on the blades.  There are better knives than a Buck Lightning for all around but they are always there and always dependable, this works for me.  I gave 3 to our son and 3 to our daughter, they treat them like I do. Forgot to say that my Lightnings are the all metal trout knives with a half serrated blade, if they get gunked up I just throw them in the dishwasher.

I carry a timberline folder I got from the MAC tools dealer. I've abused it beyond belief and it still works fine. I've scraped metal, split things by hitting the back of the blade and handle with a hammer, pryed many things open with it,and chopped with it. Kind of hard to keep an edge on it,but I think it might have something to do with the way I use it. ;D

I would never treat YOUR gear like I treat my own.  And most of my knives are not broken, just dull.  Pocket Chisels work but are not as good.
My pocket knife is a tool and I use it like that.  Other than the pocket knife I take real good of my equipment.  The pocket knife is the exception to the rule.  OH and if I did screw up your stuff I would replace it, also I ask first if it has any sentamental value before I knowingly screw it up.  There are sometimes when you can not spend the time to go to the truck for a screw driver.  Also would let contractors know I actually have tools.  I tell them I do not, other wise they want me to fix stuff while they are not there.
And I keep a leather man and a super leather man in th truck for small projects.  I once used a Leather man to install a socket at my friends house in the time it took him to dig around in his garage looking for the drill, saw and other implaments of distruction.
Really took him by suprise that I wired with out turning off the main power.  But that is what breakers are for.

since carrying knives in the state of Hawaii is now illegal, I can only speak to what I "would" carry, or what I "did" carry prior  ;) ... Boker AUS8 1/2 serrated. Short, fat, handy clip, and haven't found a way to break it yet.

My daughter's carry knife is a 99cent cutter with the break-off tip. Its not a knife officer, its a crafting tool.

Well I see two problems or loopholes with what you wrote.
1) says nothing about fixed blades so people will start using them.  I have one that have a neat leather sheath that is designed for your back pocket. AG Russel calles it the small game hunter or some thing like it.  Blade is just short of 2".  I hand them out as pocket steak knives to my friends.  They are about $20.
2)Says folding.  so knives like the Kershaw Ripcord where the blade goes into the handle.  Like the old soviet officers knives are legal as they do not "fold".
I just got two of the ripcords not too long ago.  Has a holder on your belt and looks more like a pager/ cell phone than a knife.
Bought 2 as got a deal and it is what a local shot wanted for one so I spent for two.

Here's a "neck knife" I used for a few years; the old P38..opened C-rations, ammo cans, letters and grenade pins. It was used for a nail cleaner, screw driver and burnishing tool...and that is just a start.
I found it while digging through some "old things"..brought back memories....

A Gerber LST is what I carried for years. It served me well, eventually the hinge area loosened up so much I put it into my brief case to use if I lost my current EDC. They are cheap, light, have a pocket clip and made with pretty good steel. If you abuse equipment it won't last very long, but for everyday box opening, line cutting, splinter digging, field dress a deer type stuff it is great. It won't tolerate being used as a pry-bar, the handle flexes too much and the pin will start working out.

Mine was/is about 2 3/4" blade. I'm not familiar with the skeletonized blade model, and would suspect it would be even more prone to prying failures. Don't get me wrong as the LST isn't weak, it is simply not designed to be a Spiderco or Benchmade competitor. The price is quite comfortable though. I would be on my third if it weren't for a Christmas gift.

My dress carry knife is a Fallkniven U2 folder with a Lam SGPS powder steel blade. In my jeans, I carry the larger Kershaw Gentleman's Folder with VG-10 steel. They are both light and strong.

While I was working, I carried a SS German Puma 265 folder long enough to smooth the checkered grips. I think that it's serial # date is 1981. I foolishly broke 1/8" from the tip. I still have it and will fix it one day. Life is good.

Well, I have one of just about every knife mentioned, but I am really rough on knives.
even to jumping the starter on the riding lawnmower with the blade!
Can't bring myself to do that with my Mel Pardue crocodile.
So I always carry 2 knives. The second is an Opinel twist lock that I have had
for the last 20 years. A cheap but very durable knife that is one of the
few good things to come out of france.

For more years than I can remember, I've carried a Victorinox Classic.  It has everything I need to do most everything - knife, scissors, screwdriver, file, tweezers and toothpick.  And it's super small.  I take it everywhere I go.  Only problem is that I've tried to carry it through airport security so many times because I forget I have it.  Just put it in my pocket with my change.  Lost three of them that way, and would have been more had I not been able to get back to my car and not miss the flight.  But I just love that little knife.

For a quality inexpensive folder, I think it would be hard to beat the Ontario RAT 1 for ~$30. I was given one by a friend a couple of years ago and it's been great...

You can find them on ebay along with an updated one they call the "Utilitac" for about the same price. Note - Some vendors list these as having G-10 scales, but they're actually some kind of plastic molded to look like G-10.

I bought a CRKT M16-13 (3inch drop point half serrated[about $45 then]) about 12 years ago and have carried it everyday since then.  Just recently lost it and have been looking for a genuine replacement.  In the mean time I went back to my fully serrated Spyderco Endura.
