PR Bullet performance?
« on: January 28, 2007, 07:18:21 AM »
I know there has to be a few people that have tried the Precision Rifle ML bullets.  I'm interested in trying them out for the 2007 season.

How do the Dead Center and the Extreme Elite HP perform on deer-sized game?  Since I've never seen them in person, I'm concerned about how soft the non-jacketed lead may be.

It has been my experience that dead center pure lead bullets don't do well when reaching speeds in excess of 2000 FPS. If you are going to shoot dead centers in your muzzleloader, stay with 100Grs. or less of powder.

I shot the 195 gr. DC duplex load in my standard Encore. I am using 90 gr. of loose triple 7 and I get great accuracy. I have also taken 7 deer with the bullet. All pass through shots with an exit hole about the size of a quarter.  I did not get great accuracy when I tried higher powder charges, but still fair accuracy.
If  you're going to make a hole, make it a big one.

Have you looked at the harvest pictures at the PRBullet website???

You really need to try the bullet for your own personal opinion. It's hard to say how they will perform - since you failed to mention the gun, powder choice, powder grain size preference, bullet size preference and how far-out your normal deer harvests occur.

Yep, I have looked at the pictures on their website.  Nice pictures but they obviously won't show examples of poor performance... so I asked here.

After a couple years of effective performance with Powerbelts on deer (3 shots, 3 dead), I'm looking to change to something a of higher quality.   Considering SST/Shockwave and the PR Bullets.  While I have been using 150gr 777 pellets, I will probably switch to 100-110 gr of 777 loose FF or FFF.  Typical shots are 50 - 175 yards.   I expect the PR Bullets to pretty much explode with a 50 yard shot, but the deer should be dead just the same.  Longer range accuracy is of interest...the Powerbelts were sometimes unpredictable.

bgrdnr, I posted my results with the PR bullets above that I use in my Standard Encore. I have a Pro-hunter Encore and I use the T/C Bonded Shock Wave's in it. I am using 120 gr. of loose triple 7 and I am getting 1 inch groups at 100 yards with this set up.
I used to use the Power belts also but wanted a change, the PR dead centers worked great and the T/C bonded shock wave work well also. So that is what I am slicking with.

I have shot deer from 20 yards to 165 yards with the PR dead centers and never had the bullet explode, I had a nice small entrance hole and a quarter size exit hole. Like I said with the dead centers I am only using 90 gr. of triple 7 powder which is just a little more then 2 triple 7 pellets.

I have been shooting 250 gr. SST for 4 years. In the past 4 years I have shot at 40 deer and retrieved 39 of them. They kill deer for me from 20 to 230 Yds. from an Encore with 130 grs. of Pyrodex and a Savage with 44 grs. of AA-4759. I like them because they are the cheapest jacked bullet I can find and they work. The Shock Wave is also a good bullet and would be my next choice.

Thanks Redhawk.  That was my assumption that if I used the dead centers I would have to back off on the powder.  I'm through with using the pellets, so that's no big deal.

Is my memory correct that two 50 gr 777 pellets is equivalent to 85 gr of 777 FF?

Shockwaves are the 2nd most easily found ML bullet (behind powerbelts) around me so I may try them first to prevent having to order them.

thanks for the input everyone

You are about right on about the triple 7 powder. Also if you want to try some of the 195 gr. duplex  DC's let me know, I will sell you a pack or two. I have 3 cases of them that I shot in my standard Encore M/L. I just bought them in bulk when I found out how the performed on deer and the accuracy I got with them.
