Marlin Model 60 questions...
« on: January 28, 2007, 02:04:33 PM »
I just picked up a Model 60 and have a few questions after reading the owners manual:

1.) I'm really interested in hearing replies to this question regarding Windage Adjustment.
It simply states to tap the rear Dovetail.
It just looks like there's nothing there meant to be slid/tapped left or right?
Everthing looks like it's just a one piece solid unit.
It seems like I would be literally bending something in trying to do so.
They're talking about the notched rear sight.....right?  What am I tapping it with?
I'd appreciate if anyone could help me here!

2.) It indicated that it was for 22lr high velocity cartidges...not hyper velocity.
Are the CCI Velocitors (1,400+ fps) considered hyper-v or are they only referring to the Stingers at 1,600+ fps.

3.) What kind of accuracy can I reasonably expect with open sights at 50 yds? or scoped at 50 yds?
I realize there's a need to try different brands to see what it likes.

4.) Just curious if you've scoped yours and if so what you're using.

Thanks
H&R Ultra Slug Hunter (12 ga.)
NEF SS Sidekick Muzzleloader (50 cal.)
Remington 870 Express (12 ga.)
Stevens 311-H SxS (20 ga.)
CZ 452 American (22lr)

marlin model 60's are great guns ive owned 3 for truck guns and all but the 1 i got now has been stolen cause i got out showing off how accurate they were. u can expect extremely tight groups from it with ammo it likes. all myn shoots great with federal and remington bulk ammo. they should shoot good with anything u wanna use though. i dont use a scope on myn but i know ppl with them who have a bsa 4x32 on theirs and it is quite accurate on it.

1.  Just tap the rear sight at the dovetail (notch).  I use a wood dowell and a rawhide hammer, but any light hammer will do.  Don't clobber it, just a firm tap is all you need.   It shouldn't bend.  The entire sight and elevator should move.  Try just a bit of movement then test.  Move the rear sight in the direction you want the group to go.

2.  Just about most of the standard velociy .22 ammo will be around 1200 FPS.  The CCI Velocitors should do fine.  My Model 60's do well with CCI Standard Velocity, American Eagle's, Winchester Wildcats and Federal Lightnings.  They can be finicky.  Some Mod 60's don't like the Remington bulk pack ammo from Wal Mart, but the Federal bulk ammo seems to do well.  I don't shoot Stinger or Yellow Jackets out of mine.

3.  The Model 60 pictured will print one hole ten shot groups at 50 yards from a bench.  Model 60's have a reputation for exellent accuarcy.  I have never shot mine at distances further than 50 yards.  I have read reports from those who have shot them at 100 yards and report that they to do quite well.

4.  I have Model 60's with the factory installed Glenfield and Tasco 4X15 and the one pictured, which is a Tasco 3X9X40 with Simmons rings.  All purchased at Wal Mart.  As you check around you will find some folks outfit their Model 60's with some rather nice scopes.  It really comes down to what you want to do with the rifle and what your willing to spend.

The Model 60 is a fun rifle and very easy to repair and tinker with.  Just keep it clean.  You may want to invest in a set of dental picks.  They come in handy for cleaning residue from the extractor notches located on either side of the chamber.  If they get clogged, the rifle will not extract the spent case.  Also, do not use a great deal of lube or oil on the internals.  Grit and residue will build up and cause malfunctions.  Some use dry lube, other use a small amount of oil, I just wipe the mechanics down with Hoppes or a similar solvent.  Products like Gun Scrubber can deteriorate the plastic recoil buffer that sits behind the bolt.  If you must sparay it out, you might try the new Gun Scrubber designed for use on sythetics.

Enjoy.   ;D

1. A bit to add:
Depending on the rear sight, there may be a small screw in the rear sight that puts added pressure on the dove-tail to keep it from sliding around. You may have to loosen this screw in order to adjust for windage. In fact, loosening this screw may make adjustments easy (no hammer/punch needed). If you need a punch, a brass drift won't damage the rear sight--use light raps, don't beat the heck out of it.

2. Standard velocity is around 1,200fps....
~1,400fps is not standard, it is high velocity.
Stingers are considered hypers, as are Aguila SuperMax's.
High velocity is recommended because not all subs and standards will cycle the action 100% of the time...My 60 seems to work great with standards, but not so great with subs.
Hyper's can be rough on the buffer in the action. I wouldn't recommend shooting them a lot, but a few rounds here and there should not pose an issue. I've put about 100rnds of Aguila Super Maximums (chornoed at 1,790 fps from my 60) in a row with no noticeable adverse affects. If you plan to shoot them a lot, keep a close eye on the condition of your buffer so you dont damage your reciever.

And lastly, a scope will not make the rifle more accurate--only aid the shooter in shooting more accurately.
I have a Glenfield model 60 (same as marlin) that will shoot under 1" at 50yds all day long with cheap off-the-shelf ammo at best with iron sights. My marlin model 60 with a 4x scope will shoot 5 shot groups under 3/4" consistantly with Wolf MT's...with the occasional group goin under .400 (luck).

I stand corrected.   :-[

Sorry if I sounded a bit "to the point"....i was in a hurry with a few things going on at once, but wanted to add my two cents to the situation.

I tried explaining the differences in .22lr ammo to my brother in law this weekend, and he couldn't seem to fathom that two different cartridgest hat looked identical from the outside could vary in power as much as 30% or more...

Sometimes you try and try and try...but finally have to give up because some people just weren't "made" to understand!  ;)

Not at all.  What you wrote was fine.  No offense taken in any way

The below thread has all you need to know about adjusting Model 60 sights. The sights pictured are tha same as those on the Marlin Model 60. There are great pictures as well as several posts that amount to sight adjusting tutorials for anyone interested or new to the sport and iron sights, especially the cheaper rimfire style dovetailed rear iron sights....<><.... :)

Good info, MSP

That should be a sticky on both Rimfire Forums.

My 60 likes high velocity ..standard or hyper don't function 100%..

Here's a nice website to keep on hand for rimfire ballistics    www.22ammo.com/
