Need thoughts on a progressive Lee Pro 1000 Loader for 45 ACP
« on: January 28, 2007, 06:44:12 PM »
I recently came across these "Lee Pro 1000 Loader" progressive presses.  I have read mixed reviews on these between Cabelas and Midway.  I was hoping that somebody here might know if these were any good or not.  To have a progressive press delivered to my door for under $150 would be an awesome treat, if it worked well.  I have a rock chucker and I love it.  However, I'd like to inexpensively make tons of ammo for my 45 ACP and it doesn't exactly have to be perfect for me to punch paper with it.  I'd like to know what people thought of these presses and if they were any good or not.

DO NOT BUY A LEE PROGRESSIVE!!!! Some people on here may tell you they work fine. Maybe they will get you by if you load a few hundred rounds a week but then you can do that on a single stage. I had one and also a pro master and they were both nothing but complete headaches. I bought my first dillon a 550 and gave them away and never looked back. The guy I gave them too has since gave them away again and bought a dillon. My advise is to stick with your single stage till you can afford to UPGRADE to something like a 550 or a hornady progressive. The square deals from dillon are great presses too if your just going to do handgun ammo on them. Ive got 5 of them and love them. They have a much shorter stroke then a 650 and when i get in a grove i can load as fast with one as with a 650 with a case feeder. Ps dont get me wrong here some of lees stuff is good. I buy it myself but not there progressive presses!!!

??? If I put any ammo in any of my guns I want it as perfect as I can get it.  Save up for a Dillon.

You could purchase a Lee auto indexing turret press. Not as past as a progressive, but much faster than your rock chucker.

Don't get me wrong, I want the ammo I make to be good ammo.  At the same time though I'm not shooting for competition, just for fun.  I plan on using my single stage rock chucker for my rifles, but for handguns it'd be nice to just crank them out a lot faster than what I am currently capable of doing.

I've had a Lee turret press for over 25 years and to this day have NEVER been able to get the damn thing to work properly , can't see the 1000 being any better , if you want to load that much ammo , GET the Dillon .

Don't get me wrong , i like my Lee , once i get the dies set i just change turret heads from one cal. to another , works for me . would i buy a Lee Pro . Not A Chance !!!

I agree, don’t buy the LEE! Consider the Hornady Lock and Load Progressive.  It’s cheaper than the Dillon and has several features that, IMHO are better than Dillon.

The Dillon has been on the market a long time and have great customer service, as a result, Dillon users are "foaming-at-the-mouth" dedicated to their blue presses. The Dillon's are EXCEPTIONAL presses and do an exceptional job in reloading. The guys that have Dillon’s are very satisfied. The competition to the Dillon is the Hornady Lock and Load Auto Progressive. Because most of the Dillon users are so satisfied I was swamped with comments like, "The Hornady L-n-L is Junk!" I asked if they had ever loaded on the L-n-L and 99% said no. When I did find someone that had experience with both presses, most liked the L-n-L and many had sold their Dillon's and bought the L-n-L.

IMHO the Dillon has one major shortcoming and most Dillon owners will agree if they are honest. The Dillon powder measure is sorely lacking in ease of use and adjustability. It meters ball type powder very well but flake type powder less so. And, extruded stick type powder is VERY troublesome and not all that accurate. To be fair, extruded powder is difficult in all powder measures. But, the L-n-L powder measure handles all types of powder MUCH better than the Dillon. Also, it is a pain to swap out the Dillon powder measure to another die plate. As a result, many owners have several powder measures on seperate die plates for changing calibers. This significanly drives UP the COST.

Also, the Dillon gets filthy as the old primers are caught in a cup after they have rolled off the side of the press. The L-N-L spent primers are dropped thru a plastic tube and into the trash or bottle or whatever you want to use. The point is, the dirt off the spent primers does not foul the workings of the press. As a result, the L-N-L IS MUCH CLEANER TO USE THAN THE DILLON.

The Dillon 550 has 4 die stations and the L-N-L has 5 stations. The Dillon 650 has 5 stations but, costs significantly more. Also, the Dillon 550 does not auto index, the L-n-L does. The Dillon 650 DOES auto index, but again, at more cost.

Next, the L-N-L uses a really slick bushing system for mounting loading dies to the press. It makes changing calipers and SNAP. After a die is adjusted for whatever you are loading you can remove the die from the press with an 1/8 turn and insert a different die. Each die has it's own bushing. The Dillon uses a die plate. The Dillon die plate costs more than L-N-L bushings. Another neat feature with the Hornady is that you can buy a bushing conversion setup and use the same bushings on your RCBS, Lyman or other single stage press and the L-N-L!

Additionally, the L-N-L seems to be built like a tank! The ram is about 2"+ in diameter and the basic press is similar in construction to the RCBS Rockchucker. I would say that a side-by-side comparison to the either the Dillon 550 OR 650, the L-N-L is at least as sturdily built. And, In some areas I think the L-N-L is better built. i.e., The massive ram, powder measure, and primer system. The head/top of the press is solid except for where the dies are inserted. The Dillon has a large cutout that is needed for their die plates. By just looking, it would seem the L-N-L would be stronger. But, of course, that may not be the case.
There is one piece that can get damaged on the L-N-L. There is a coil spring that holds the cases in the shell holder that can get crushed if you improperly change shell holders. That's the bad news. The good news is that they are only about $2-3 and they won't get crushed if you change shell plates correctly. The other good news is that this spring is the primary reason that while loading you can easily remove a case at any station. With the Dillon you have to remove pins in order to take a shell out of a shell plate.

You can load anything on both the Dillon and L-N-L from .25 ACP to 500 N.E. Realistically, I would say that people with progressive loaders mostly load pistol ammo about 99% of the time. After using the L-N-L for while I feel confident that my Grandkids will be using when I'm gone.

In summary, the Hornady L-N-L has all the features of the Dillon 650 but is much cheaper. Changing calipers is faster and cheaper. The powder measure on the L-N-L is VASTLY SUPERIOR TO THE DILLON, at least in my opinion. I bought the L-N-L and am very satisfied. A shooting buddy of mine is a long time, dedicated Dillon user. He has three! After giving me a ration of "stuff" about my choice, he came over and used my L-N-L and sheepishly said, "That's a very nice setup!!"

Leave the Lee alone. If you want a top quality progressive press, get what all the serious shooters use. DILLON!!! My 550 has paid for itself many times over, and you simply cannot beat their customer service.

As you can see the Lee products do not fair vary well with most reloaders. If pistol ammo is all you are interested in loading in volume you might consider the Dillon Square Deal. I load thousands of rounds a year on mine with very little trouble. I can load 300rds an hour pretty easily.   KN

Have to go against the flow here. My first progressive was a Dillon. Not sure of the model, think it was a 550. I decided a press that didn't auto index was nothing more than a high priced turret press. Traded it for two SKS carbines. Loaded single stage on the old Rockchucker for another ten years or so before I bought a Pro 1000 in .45ACP. Turned out a ton of good ammo with it. The only real problem I had with it was the three station turret. I needed a forth station for my factory crimp die, or post sizing die. Bought the Load Master with the five station turret. The Loadmaster works as advertised, and turns out good ammo at a high production rate. If I were buying a Dillon it would have to be the Square Deal or the 650. For pistol ammo, I think the SD is a better option. Problem with the 650 in not so much the initial purchase price, but the price of all the options that you have to buy to take advantage of the press's capabilities. Plan on spending about the same money as the initial purchase price for the case feeder, dies, and bullet trays that you need to fully utilize the press. I have all that on the LM for the $200 initial purchase price. Mine works great, as have all the Lee products I have purchased over the last 40 yrs. The choice is yours, if money were no object, I'd buy the Dillon 650 if I wanted a Dillon. To each his own, good luck with whatever you choose, and enjoy reloading!

I bought the pro 1000 used. The primers do not feed and is a royal pain when it messes up. I just bought a new primer assembly and have not had it tested yet. The press had been used a lot before I bought it. I bought a loadmaster since for the 45 acp and it is awesome. I have loaded a 1000 rounds so far and it has not given me any problems at all. Seems a great deal for the price. Dillons are great I am sure ( have not used one). MOney is a concern with me and as much as I would like to, I just don't shoot that much  so I cannot justify  a lot of expense,  good luck

Here's a few comments about that press that I've found on various message boards:

"Okay I currently have a Lee precision 1000 loader or some such crap. And honestly that is what it is. Crap. It doesn't work worth a damn for a progressive reloader. It isn't horrible, but it takes ALOT of time the primer feed is ****, and you have to jack with it constantly, and it is just a PITA in general. Not to mention having to have a 4 die after you load your bullets to crimp them."

"I had a Lee Progressive 1000. You called it right. It was a piece of crap."

The first press I ever bought was  the Pro 1000 in 45ACP.  That was at least 10 years ago and that press is still happily humming along without a breakage or problem. I see some posters mentioned primer feed problems but on my press that has never been an issue as long as I keep the flipper tray partially filled. I would definately buy one again... actually I have. I bought a second one and set it up for 44mag. That one has been happily humming along for almost as long but not with the same volume of ammo used as 45acp.

Hello all,
I see a lot of replys about "Chunk the LEE and save up for the Dillon" or "I don't have a Pro 1000 but it will probably be junk"
Well I've had a LEE Pro 1000 for about 10 years and have loaded hundreds of thousands of rounds through it and it takes me longer to decide what load I'm going to use than to load 50 rounds in it.
I used to load  .45 ACP in until I traded it off for a Marlin 1894, but whill I was loading for the 45 it was as fast as for the other calibers I load for.
Once you get the despencer set on a certain weight charge its there and you can load 50 rounds in under 15 minutes loading at a leasurely pace.
I don't know about LEE customer service because I never had to use it.  ;D
So dont let anybody tell not to buy a LEE Pro 1000, they are as good as any other press. ;D

Happy shooting

if you buy lee get the load master. it is there top of the line, and is built better than the 1000
like most products if you get the better models it pays in the long run. I have the load master
set up for 223  for six years now and must have loaded 3 thousand rounds for my varmint trips and
still going strong.

I had worse luck with the load master then with the pro 1000. It might be fine for someone who loads 3000 rounds in 6 years but i have 6 dillons and everyone of them probably loads that many in one year and the 45 and 9mm probably crank out that 10000 in a year and it will even wear out parts on the dillons. There customer service is the best in the industry. You need a part you just tell them and its free theres no sending in the old one. Only part ive ever had to return is one of my oldest square deals had the main frame crack and they recomended i return the whole press and in two weeks it came back totaly rebuild free of charge. The lees might work for someone who wants a 100 rounds for the weekend to plink with but i could do that on a single stage. My recomdation is to find a buddy with a dillon to let you try. Most dillon owners have a lee in a box in the garage or closet with a bunch of dust on it that they may let you set up and try too. Thats if they didnt dump it a year later for half what it cost them to some pour undeserving soul.

Midway and Cabelas have them on their websites.  Both websites have reviews on them also.  Cabelas reviews a always positive so I don't know how much that is worth to anyone.
