"Accurized" 30-30?
« on: January 28, 2007, 07:30:42 PM »
I'm interested in the idea of accurizing a Marlin 336 30-30.  Websites such as Gary Reeder, Clements Custom Guns, Brockman, etc., say they can turn 45-70's into minute of angle rifles that will group along side bolt actions.  I would love a super accurate lever action 30-30.  I have no need of a 45-70 or .475 or .500 cal. lever action.  Too much kick. Too much recoil.  To expensive to shoot.

A nice 30-30 that would shoot accurately would be just the ticket.  What would it cost?  What would have to be done?  I'm generally unfamiliar with lever action accurizing technics.  I am willing to pay someone who knows what they're doing to "accurize" an M 336 in 30-30 if it really is possible.

Any suggestions or comments?

I had a 336SS "accurized". I'm told that the magazine hangers and forearm were relieved from contacting the barrel and the magazine tube was shimmed to eliminate vibration. WWG "Happy Trigger" was also installed. It will shoot MOA with handloads off the bench, but POI still changes some depending on how many rounds are in the magazine and how the forearm is rested. Cost was ~$200. It is definitely an improvement, but I probably wouldn't do it again.

You are on the right track for a 'smith, but check out some of the accurizing tips at leverguns.com and marlinowners before you take the leap.

cost should be simular to a 4570. In most cases there going to want to fit anew barrel and that alone makes the project jump out of the enconomy class

Over at Leverguns there is an article about accurizing lever guns.  Links is below.

I have 5 Marlin levers.  .45-70, .444, .35 Remington, .30-30, and .25-20.  All of them will shoot a 3 - shot 1" group at the bench with the right loads.  I am getting old and I can't see sights well enough so I have a good scope on each one.  I have found that if the barrel is properly broken in, and there is nothing special to this, just shooting and cleaning, and you find a load that the gun really likes, you can get this kind of accuracy form almost any Marlin with common sense, provided there is no defect in the gun.  My .30-30 does this with several loads both handloaded and factory, so you are not limited to handloads.  Experiment with different bullet weights and shapes.  (No pointy bullets!) Them shoot the %^#* out of it.  One of them will shine.  My .30-30 shoots the 170 grain bullets with great accuracy.  All the factory 170's I've tried work well.  The 150's are not as good and the Leverevolution stuff does not work in mine.  My point is just practice.  You don't have to spend several hundred dollars to get these Marlins to shoot.  Practice Man!  Practice!  Thanks, Blowtorch

My 30AW in 30-30 needed a good trigger job but now shoots half inch groups at 100 yards consistently with Federal Premium factory loads.  Deer around here haven't heard that this isn't enough gun fortunately.

Try firing your rifle with the fore end, and magazine removed, supporting it at the receiver. If there is considerable improvement, then relieving the magazine bands and fore end will help. If there isn't an improvement, your are likely wasting your money, at least in that area.

What would be the intended use of an accurized 30-30? How would you define a successful accurized 30-30?

Open sights, cast bullets, 5 shots, 50yds

Offhand 5 shots, 50yds, open sights.

It will shot this way all day long.

ratltrap,  I am interested in the WWG trigger.  I see it has been a while since your post.

I have a Marlin 336 in .30-30 with the capability of 100 yd. 1.0 MOA benchrest handload accuracy from a Factory POS trigger.  Creep, >10# pull, you name it, it is POJunk.  As an experienced shooter I can shoot it well, but never take it out of the safe anymore.  I want my 11 y.o. to use it for himself, but not with that Factory trigger.

What are my .30-30 options?  [Yea, sure - dump it for a good .243, I know.  I don't want to go there in this discussion.]

All this depends on what you want to shoot at .

I cast my own bullets for .45-70 & reload .  I can probably shoot for less $$$ per shot than you can shoot your .30-30 , if you are shooting off the shelf ammo .

And as far as recoil , first add a slip on rubber recoil pad .  Second , I can load it just as light as you wish or probably as hot or hotter than you wish to shoot it .
