new here and wondering if anybody applails for a moose tag in maine

I'm from Massachusetts and don't apply, but my father is a Maine resident and has applied every year since it started in 82 or 83 or so. He's been drawn twice and allowed me to shoot the moose as his subpermittee. A cow in 1997 and a bull this past Fall, 2006....

I've been fortunate enough to be on 3 successful Me. moose hunts as a non-resident; 2 as sub permitee & 1 as permittee. Locations were Winterville, Weld, & Rangely. I have not applied for some time now & doubt I ever will again due to price of non-resident permit, "multiple choice" preference point sale, elimination of "Any moose" permits and age. It was great before they got greedy, when I was younger & had $$$.

You get point for every consecutive year you apply , I am on my 6th year of applying as a non resident , no luck yet , I also apply for bull only , I guess the odds of drawing would be better if I took any moose , but I figure if I am going to do it I want a bull.
If your application isn't already in and postmarked you are too late for this year.
When you draw a tag you can't apply for the next 2 yrs , so I figure every year I don't gert pick , those who do get picked won't be back for 2 yrs at least

I assume you mean 15 or 16 yrs applying but not drawing a tag
If so , that doesn't make me very hopeful , I have heard it may take awhile

And DLuke , any bigger of a moose and you'd need wheelie bars on that truck , any idea on what that one weighed?

After 12 years I drew a bull permit in Area 18 last year (07) in Oct. Rut was over, but I saw 3 bulls. Ended up with a 46" 14 pt. bull. Just what I dreamed about. Real nice people up there. Keep putting in for one. I am. Bill in Pa.

Back in 88 I was stationed in Maine in the military and was lucky enough to draw a bull license on my first attempt. I had no clue what I was doing, but a local friend i'd met was a licensed Maine Guide and had told me what areas to put in for. I was drawn in the area of where he guided so i was able to stay at his lodge during my hunt. I shot my moose on opening day using my TC Contender with a 14" 45/70 barrel at 87 yards. I was in total awe at just how dam big those things really are. It turned out when i checked the moose in that i was the first person in Maine to LEGALLY take a moose with a handgun and i was interviewed and felt pretty proud of myself when i didn't have a clue then what i'd really done. Now looking back upon that great experience.......it's turned out to be the most memorable hunt of my life time. The people in Maine are wonderful and it's a sportsman's paradise. I miss Maine and now that the bases are all closing down.......it's like i've lost a part of me forever, but my moose hunt will never be forgotten.

My family applies each year. So far I have eleven preference points lined up. Getting the draw is hard. There have been people applying for decades and were never picked. This year the state of Maine is doing the drawings completely online. No longer will they mail out applications.

My brother and I have applied every year since 1996 as non-residents, and neither one of us has been drawn. I don't think the odds are very good, but I keep sending them my $30 every year. I could have bought a gun for the money I've sent them.

I play every year. I have the max amount of "bonus" chances the state gives out.I shell out every year for 6 chances.(why break tradition) I have been on 2 hunts as a sub permittee absolute blast.

Been applying since hunt started. No luck. Has anyone heard about new special moose hunt where outfitters will have permits. I assume they are selling them. Any info on prices asked. Might be the only way to get a hunt.

Those are the stories I've heard and read about. It's not worth a lifetime of applying to hunt moose in maine as a non resident. Years ago my father in law was really excited about a moose hunt, and I think about the best place to try was newfoundland. Good luck getting a tag.

The scales are definately weighted so those willing to buy enough chances will have the best odds and will trump all those "Preferance points" accumulated by yearly applicants. The mafia couldn't even have come up with one this good.

Congrats jarv442. I drew a zone 6 October bull tag. I had the max number of bonus points, plus the 10 chances I bought.

Well, as I write this, the results have just been posted on the Maine web-site. No luck this year. I can't complain though, as I did draw a bull tag in 1993, and shot a nice bull. Odds of a non-resident drawing a tag are pretty slim, but it's about the only game in town east of the Mississipi unless you want to go to Canada. Congrats to those selecyed this year. Moose are plentiful in many areas. I always take at least a week each year just to go up and run my camera, shooting moose the "friendly way".

I was drawn this year for a bull in WMD 13. It was my fifth year applying, so I count myself fortunate. For the next two years it'll be my wife applying. :-)

Have had two permits, my brother has had one, my niece one, and this year my son has one, we have been very lucky and have put no money to politicians.
