Marlin model 60 or 795
« on: January 29, 2007, 12:14:37 PM »
Ok which model Marlin autoloading 22 rifle is better the model 60 or the model 795.
25 years or more ago I had a magazine fed Marlin autoloader 22 rifle and I must say it was one of my most unreliable semiauto rifles.
I don’t think I could ever shoot a full magazine and not get a jam.I guess it could of been the magazine but I do remember it didn’t like any brand of ammo I fed it.
I never had or even shot a model 60 so I can’t comment on those. But now I’m toying around on buying a 22 rifle or two. I need ones that’s are reliable and will cycle rounds with no bother.
I know about the Ruger 10/22, Remington 552, 597 I’ve either own or have access to those rifles. But it’s been a long time since I’ve shot a Marlin model 22 autoloader, so what do you think about those model or any other firearm manufacture models?

love my model 60. It has shot god knows how many rounds and never been cleaned. and still shoots well.  I have had it for close to fifteen years, and can probably count the number of times it has jammed on my hands (thats not bad, maybe once a year)  And actually my uncles 10/22 jams more than my 60.  Also quite a bit cheaper than a 10/22.

I have shot Model 60's since I was a kid, and they really are great rifles. Extremely handy and light, and also extremely accurate. Offhand, I put 17 rounds from a 60 into a quart oil bottle, at 25 yards. I have never had a problem with mine, except with some of the bulk ammo no being consistent. Other than that it is an awesome value in a .22 semi-auto.

I love my 60's...
All of which are extremely accurate (sub 3/4" at 50yds with off the shelf ammo) with scopes... I have a hard time with their iron sights.

That being said, my newest 60 (new? haha, 1993) in black synthetic has been cleaned ONCE since it's purchase... I've put 500+ rounds per sitting through it, with a maximum of 3-4 jams or misfires...
They all seem to love Federal Champion Bulk Packs (HP's, High Velocity) But do very well with just about anything (except remington golden bullets, and winchester X-perts).

I went shooting with an old high school buddy about a month ago, and together we put 525 rounds through my marlin (federal bulk pack) with ZERO jams or misfires (remember, this thing hasn't been cleaned in years). We spent the remainder of the day finding the best price locally, and he went home with a new model 60.

They are one of the best values for the money....I mean for $150 bucks you got a semi-automatic rifle that is extremely accurate out of the box, and a thousand or so rounds of ammo. You cant beat it.

Well I ordered the model 795ss from the dealer yesterday. He had a model 60 and the model 70ss at his shop. I was pretty impressed with how they appeared to be made. Much better then I remember from the early 80's. I decided on the 795 because of it's clip magazine since young shooters will use it at times.
What ammo do these models like?

Thanks

mine does not like the remington golden bullets, but is spitting out winchester wildcats and seems to like them well.

I have a model 60 that is quite new, with on about 100 rounds through it. It is very accurate..but not as accurate as the rifle it replaced...when I gave my 7000 to my Grandson.

With the 7000 being essentially a 795 w/ bull barrel, I think I have grounds to compare.

the 7000 is extremely accurate but the 60 comes very close to it. The 60 only likes high velocity rounds so far..no standards..no hypers either. The 7000 liked standards and high velocities..the only hyper I used (sparingly) was the Velociter..I don't lay that to the model though, but to the Individual rifles since I believe the actions are identical, except the 7000 has a Bentz chamber.

Frankly, being a hunter, I like the magazine better than the tube feed . Seven shots are more than I am likely to use at one firing and I can carry two clips ..one with standards one with HVs or hypers  so I have more choices. The clip models are easier/quicker to clear the weapon ( be sure it is empty).

Most of this is of course simply individual choices, either one would be a nice .22 to own.

IRONGLOW:

Are you shooting that Model 60 scoped or unscoped?
If scoped, with what?

I've just picked up a Model 60 that's yet to be shot since it's back at Marlin for some warranty work.
I'm debating whether to scope it or not.

Do you have any experience or opinions of the Weaver Rimfire Classic scopes, either the 2x7x28 or 4x28.
I've read a decent review of the Bushnell Rimfire scopes which are considerable less money...about $100 diff.
Just wondering if the difference in price is worth it.

Thanks

even a plain old bushnell banner would be good, and not much more money for maybe a little better scope.

I use scopes on all my rifles..not because I want to..but I have to . These 70 yr old eyes just don't focus on the different planes like they used to !...LOL
My model 60 has an older Bushnell Sportview scope (4X32) on it. The scope has held it's zero quite well, and although there are few rounds through the rifle, it has been handled quite a bit.

I have a range down in my woods, about 5 miles from my house and when I go down for a shooting session, I usually take 3 to 5 guns...

If the cost won't strain your budget..get a good scope such as the Weaver rimfire.

SWFA has the Weaver 4X28 for about $115 and their 2.5-7X28 for about $130... a compact size that compliments your rimfire rifle !

The Marlin Model 60 is definately a great rifle. I have shot many of them over the years. It seems like everyone of my friends had model 60's when we were kids. The guys are right they are extremely accurate and economically priced. Also if you can find them I recommend the Remington Nylon 66. It is a very durable gun and very unique. We have three of them in the family and none of our rifles have EVER jammed! My mom even wants to buy one for herself even though dad owns one. Just something for you to think about.  :-\

  Navy;

Kinda makes one wonder..why did Rem ever dabble with the Viper and now the 597 ?

Yeah you are right it does kind of make you wonder about that. I do have a viper and it is a good gun but it is definately not the "66". It has a big problem with the magazines getting dirty and not feeding properly. I have never shot the 597 so I can't say anything about it though.

I had a 66 years ago. But sold it, one of my many firearms mistakes! It did shoot anything I put in it.
I have an "older" 597 It also cycles just about any 22 round as long as I put no more than 7 in the magazine.
Which is fine since I don't plink that much anyhow. The 597 is pretty accurate and durable. I've been using it for the past few weekends for small game hunting. I'm going to take the 795 this Saturday.

I have several model 60 Marlins and love them.  It's rare that I don't win Hunter Silhouette matches with the one pictured below.  It's a 60W with the barrel shortened and recrowned to 19 3/8", reworked 3# trigger, jeweled bolt and 4X scope.  VERY accurate and fun to shoot.

Well, I've been using a 795ss for the past month or so hunting in one of our State Forests. The rifle carried and shot flawlessly from below zero to the single digits. It's a very light rifle and that was a plus with all the other winter clothing and gear that I take. Being stainless and having a synthetic stock helped the rifle keep the snow and ice from effecting the rifle's operation. Very nice rifle for the elements. The only thing I may have not like was the magazine since it does stick out of the bottom of the rifle. Occasionally it would hang up on my pack or jacket. I may buy a model 60 stainless because of that. But my Daughter and nephews may use the rifle. So I felt the clip magazine was safer for them to use.

I have 2 795's, best little .22 I have ever had. Light for packing around in the hills, accurate and has not failed to fire yet. Have 4X Bushnell on one and iron on the other. Had a 10/22, ok gun but stock felt like a 4x4, bad design and I had several ftf with good ammo plus it was spotless clean. Just my .02 worth.

I have owned both the marlin model 60 and a model 7000.

I love the Model 60. The one I owned liked any ammo and I don't remember it ever jamming. It was the kind of .22 you didn't have to take apart and clean every couple hundred rounds. On the other hand the 14 round tubular magazine gets annoying to load. Also if you want to empty the rifle it takes longer than with a removable magazine.

I now own the Model 7000 which is a model 795 with a Bull barrel and no front sight. This rifle often jams with cheap ammo after shooting about 250 rounds. After cleaning it shoots fine again untill dirty. It seems pickier than other .22's I have owned. It is still a very accurate fun to shoot little .22. You are also stuck with the factory 10 round magazines. I have not been able to find an aftermarket High Cap.

Hope this helps someone.

Do you know of a gunsmith that can do a trigger job on a model 60?
Mine has a little creep that I would like taken out.

I have the 795 and after finding the right ammo, it is great. I like the light little rifle for carring, and with Winchester Super X copper coated HP's it works with out a hitch. I tried Winchester bulk pack, non copper coated bullets and found it got dirty real fast. When it gets dirty, it starts to mess up.

As far as the trigger on the 60/7000 models..I would give a new rifle some time before I do anything with the trigger..my 7000 had a much better trigger after about 5-600 rounds than it had when new...

I bought my son a 795 when he completed his hunter ed course, and it shoots like a dream. The 60 always has been a shooter.
It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
