17 HMR Range Report
« on: January 29, 2007, 04:06:58 PM »

I finally had the chance to take out the little 17.  It handles just like I had imagined.

It initially went through good cleaning with JB. When I arrived at the range, I didn't even shoot at the target.  I put 3 rounds through it and then cleaned the bore.  This step was repeated six times.  I could not stand the anticipated of shooting at the target.

Finally, I aimed at the target and was happy with the initial placement.  After adjusting the scope and several more rounds the gun started shooting just right.

The last group (picture) of seven shots came after one last bore cleaning.  The first two were slightly off to the left.  I attributed these as fouling rounds and made no adjustments.  The next five were very nice.

One last thing, I hope the photo uploads.

That's not bad to start off, but it should do that at 100yds after it's broke in good and with the right ammo, you have lots more more ammo to try tween CCI, Rem, Hornady, Federal and Winchester, both in 17gr and 20gr, Vmax, FMJ, TNT, Gamepoint and XTP, just don't buy too much until you know what works good, then buy more of the same lot#. ;)

Tim,

Thanks.  I can't wait to get out to the range again.  I will try the others and fine out which ones she likes best.

It is truly a fun caliber. :D

Yes, it is, I have 4 of em, plus a 17M2 which is also a fun caliber and a little cheaper to shoot than the 17hmr, $5-$6 a box instead of $10 or $11, just as accurate, but 100-125yd is about max, not as destructive on eatable game. ;)

Have fun!! ;)
