what do you carry you trapping lures in?
« on: January 30, 2007, 06:56:29 AM »
Any ideas on a good container to carry lures and baits in?  Tired of my jeep and garage smelling like a skunk!
I think there is room for all of God's creatures....... right beside the mashed potatoes.

I store mine in  big plastic jars with a screw on lid to keep the odor down during the off season.

I use an ice cream bucket. Cut a layer of newspapers in a circle to line the bottom, and snap a cover on top. Easily holds bait plus 4-5 bottles of lure. One usually lasts me through a season.

Foxman, no matter how you store lures , you will get some drifting smell....lol... plus  maybe some on yourself.   The idea of icecream bucket is very good as thats what ive used for years and works great.  I have a five gallon bucket that i keep bulk lures , urine  to refill with and bucket has sealed cover.

Ok,

To store lures, with NO oder. Put them in a Paint can. Add some fresh ground coffee (dry). Then hammer the lid back on. This is the way, I recomend people who are selling me Skunk Essence, to ship it.

not really talking about storage, I am wanting something for when I am running my traps.  I have a big box that is on the back, but for speed I usually keep my lures in the floorboard in a small plastic box with a lid.  I may be trying to make it too difficult, but figured there was someone out there that was using something unique that would reduce the smell.  It doens't bother me, but sure does everyone else that rides with me.

Five gallon bucket with sealing cover.  alot of five gallon plastic paint pails have the resealable rubber ring on cover. Use that.  Or else  your box sounds like it works just fine like my icecream pail.  If smell doesnt bother you, i would forget it as your the trapper.. ;)

I have my lure bottles in a fanny pack while trapping. I strap it on in the morning along with my gun holster, and take it off at the end of the day. If the fanny pack gets to gamie. I throw it in the washing machine with a dose of laundry soap and baking soda. As for keeping the smell out of the truck cab??? My hands are usually the biggest problem with messing up the steering wheel. But! Anyone who doesn't like the smell in the truck, don't need to ride with me LOL!
As Newt stated earlier when I have something stinky I want to keep in the house, it goes in a paint can.

When I'm trapping I put them in a small plastic cooler. It helps to keep them from freezing.I don't mind the odor,it smells like money.
I love the smell of coyote gland lure early in the morning. It smells like victory!!

Back in the days when I ran long and hard, I ALWAYS kept the canine lures in my coat pocket. Extra lure was kept in a paint can. When the pocket went dry, I'd reload from the can. The 4-oz size can be too easily broken, so I used one ouncers. Everybody has a choice. That's why there are Fords, Chevies and now Toyotas.

I have a good story to tell about one very cold rainy day when I went into a small cafe needing a hot bowl of soup. I hung up my old Army field jacket with a couple bottles of big duece tucked in the left hip pocket. Half way through my soup an incomming customer loudly said, WHEEEW, Who shot the Skunk!!"  Needless to say I downed my soup and hastily did a fast retreat.

Thats the problem with trapping those flea buses, stinky things to attract them.
Now when trapping Gods favorite animal--you get to carry around nothing but good smelling stuff(Moundmaster #s 1 &2)

Found a container at Target that latches and has a rubber seal.  Air tight .  Cost me about $4 and is easy to carry.  Used a piece of thick stryofoam in the bottom and cut out holes for 1oz bottles.  Give me a insulation to prevent freezing and keeps them from getting broke.

I use a fanny pack. Not very fashionable, but you can get them for a song now vs. back when they were popular. Line them with a gallon-size ziplock to keep odors in. I keep several totes in trunk of my little car for all of my trapping equipment, etc. and for catches. Take it all out every night to keep the car smelling sort of clean. I line the trunk with a cheap tarp also.
As for the inside of my car, I use a lot of hand cleaner, unscented baby wipes, etc. and that seems to help. I wash my hands in every pond or stream I come across, too. Wipe down the trowel once and awhile, too.
I'm not big on being to squeaky clean with unnatural scents while predator trapping, but I get away with it here in the heavily populated farm areas where I trap. Baby wipe scents on your hands may not work in more remote areas where the coyotes are a little more in-tune with the odd odors like this. The creatures here though have encountered just about every piece of garbage, human scent, foot print, spent cartridge, machinery fluids, you name it they probably have experienced it in their lifetime...and I wager that most of the time the harmless piece of garbage never hurt them so they probably don't have much in way of negative reaction to such odors. I just go with what they are used to, I guess. My wife is a neat-freak and is not big on germs and smelly animal odors coming home with me. I do my best to keep her happy, and she lets me do what I want to which keeps me happy. If it means taking out a sanitizing wipe and scrubbing down my hands, the steering wheel, etc. from time to time during season, well, who am I to not honor her requests.

When I do trapping conventions,my lures are hauled in large coolers. The urines go in seperate coolers.I also duct tape the tops of the urine coolers, nothing more potent than fox urine.I actually hate handling it.The odor penetrates into your hair and clothes, which is fine at the conventions, but sure can get somes stares at the resteraunt at supper time. The heavy skunk lures, are hauled in a sealed 3 or 5 gallon bucket.
On my multiple species traplines, lures and baits are carried in 3 gallon square buckets.
When trapping spring beaver,I wear a type of carpenters belt.It holds my 40z lure bottles and a couple safety grippers.Though often a bottle or two is tucked in my pocket. The sweet smell of castor is one of my favorite odors.Just watch out if you stop for gas or a pop,or a raincoat(lol). Those female clerks are attracted to castor, like bears to honey. My wife makes me carry a stick ,to keep those women at bay.
