Need help with Arisaka
« on: January 30, 2007, 07:56:52 AM »
I have a 7.7mm Arisaka that will not feed cartridges from the magazine.  From what I've been able to determine so far is that the firing pin protrudes from the bolt when it is "uncocked", as the bolt it pushed forward and starts to pick up a round from the magazine the rim of the case hits the protruding firing pin and the action locks up.

If I load a cartridge directly into the chamber and close the bolt it will fire just fine.  Since the action cocks on closing the firing pin is retracked in the last fraction of an inch before the bolt locks up....so I don't get any slam fire.

I've diassembled the bolt and don't find any kind of adjustment for the firing pin (ala Mosin Nagant) so I'm now stymied.  Has some previous owner substituted an incorrect firing pin in this rifle?  Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Thanks,
Roudy

Sounds like the firing pin is excessively long. Mine is a 6.5 mm but maybe someone with a 7.7 can give you what the overall legnth of the firing pin is supposed to be.

What is the length of the firing pin on the 6.5 mm?  I could compare it to mine and see if they are the same or different?

Roudy,

Been working on this 7.7x58 Arisaka Type 99 sporter for over a year if your interested:
http://www.precisionshooters.com/ibforum/index.php?showtopic=4575

When fired, the pin on mine does not protrude when the bolt is retracted nor does it protrude when its closing!?

Might try geting another firing pin (part 4) or more likely need a whole bolt assembly (part 3A) from Numrich.
They are shown in their schematic link below:

Ray,
That's a nice looking Arisaka you have!

I think I've found the problem on mine.  I didn't realize that the tip of the firing pin assembly could be screwed off, but it can.  What looked like a vent to me was actually the tip of the firing pin backing out.  Screwed it back in and snugged it up and it is fine now.

Many years ago I bought an Arisaka that someone started to sportsterize but didn't finish.  He had rebarreled it to 6 mm Remington and put it into a sportster stock.  I bought it at a gunshop for a little of nothing, took it home and glass bedded the action, cleaned it up and put on a scope.  As I was trying it out at the local range I was getting moa groups when another member commented that he had recently gotten rid of an Arisaka....turned out to be the one I had!  That was one great groundhog rifle.

Don't see manny Arisaka posts so I wanted to jump in....
Glad you found your problem and that it was simply fixed.
I have a 6.5x50 Arisaka that was sporterized and rechambered to 6.5x55 swede.
I bought it from my 90 year old neighbor before he moved to the home  :-[
It shoots MOA at 100yds with my handrolled cartridges using 140 & 160 gr bullets and RE22.
I keep it at our ranch in Texas and use it for Hogs & Predators.
Its extremely effective on both...
