Why the 325 WSM?

at a real diameter of 8mm for the life of me I would not buy one.  The 300 WSM offers almost the same with better sectional density and more available bullets.

I may be wrong , but I believe the 300wsm and 300wm may have the exact same bullet availibiliy.

Yeah, just offer 12 ga shotguns, a 22LR, and a 30/06.  No real need for anything else is there?

I assume your talking about factory ammo of which I know very little. If your talking reloads, what bullet that works in the 300 Min Mag won't work in the 300WSM?

 YES AND NO! With factory ammo you are limited in bullet choice. And while it's technically possible to use 200grn and heaiver bullets in a wsm you only get 06 level preformance a 300 WM has almost 200 fps (in some cases more) over the top wsm loads with heavy bullets. There's just no replacment for displacment.

Ah! I don't load or shoot any 30 mag's so have only my reloading manual for reference and they do not agree with you. Perhaps a cronograph would tell me a different story.

I won't get into a debate of one cartridge over another, discussions of this nature will go on till the end of time.  As for the 325WSM, Winchester has done this before.  They throw a handful of new cartridges at American hunters all at once, some of them stick some go away.  They did it in the 60s with the 300, 264, 338 and 458 Win Mags, the 300 and 338 caught on big, the 458 is still in use, but the 264 is all but gone.

 A quick lookup of Hodgdon's reloading data posted on thier webpage, Is where I got my refrence.

In a nutshell it appears as though a Win mag will propell a 220grn pill as fast as a WSM can push a 200 grainer........... And then of course there's the 250 grain .308 diameter monsters

so you get less sectional density than a 300 WSM, less speed and sectional density than the 300 WM and a lot of less everything than the 338 WM bit all in a cool short case that will not feed as well!

The .300 wsm doesnt handle the heavys as well as the .300 win mag, the same way as the .308 wont handle the heavys like the .30-06.  Gas tank is a bit smaller and the long bullets sit to deep. Its of no bother to me however as i see no advantage in shooting anything in .30 over 200 gr. anyways. 

There was no need for the .300wsm in terms of a practical cartridge, but its a good round and if it helped the co's sell more guns im all for it!

The 300 WSM at least makes some sense with a 200 grain bullet at 2930.  The 325 does not offer any advantage.

    So you don't like it ........................................... so what? why keep on about it then.

     Now if I was to consider a WSM the only one I would actually consider is the .325. However it's all hypothetical as getting a variation on my fireaarms certrificate for a .325 is not likely to happen  ???.

I like the short rounds, have a 270 and 300WSM's in Winchester Super Shadows............and they feed just fine..........super accurate( 1/2" -- 3/4" groups) and mild recoil.

8mms are fun.  The 325 wsm was intended to be the shortmag equilvent of the 338wm, while it is close it isn't exactly that.  It is a novel idea and the only one of the factory wsm that interests me...But I'm a sucker for 8mms.  I believe that in performance on game it should excel, but it solves a problem that didn't exist.  One positive side effect is that if it catches on, it will lead to better 8mm bullets... something in between 8x57 and 8mm Remington bullet construction.
