.221 Fireball Question...
« on: January 30, 2007, 07:55:44 PM »
I am planning to go out 'yote hunting this next weekend and I will be taking my .221 Fireball Remmy 700 w/ a Weaver 3-9x38. I am currently set-up to shoot 50 Grain V-max bullets and I can consistently hit a clay target at a lasered 200 yards. I am more than confident that this round is effective...here is the kicker. I want a 'yote to have a full body mount done to turn into a coffee table scene. I am worried that the V-max will do a lot of tissue damage on the exit wound and make the mount impossible or very difficult. Will this round do OK or should I get something else? Here are my other options:

45 grain Hornady Bee
45 grain Nosler Solid Base
40 grain Hornady V-Max
50 grain Hornady V-Max
50 grain CT Ballistic Silver Tip
40 grain CT Ballistic Silver Tip

Thanks in advance for any info!

I would give it a try, Even if it busts through a little you can always do a little sewing to patch things up. If this does not work you might have to go to the lighter bullet. The big {if} is at what range you bustem at is going to be. There has to be a range that your bullet will not exit the coyote with the bullet you use, I do not know the area you hunt in but i am sure you will have plenty coyotes to make a good evoluation of what you need, Hope this helps........Joe........

A buddy used the 50 v-maxes out of his .223 for one season they are a really fragile bullet. Even out of the fireball I would not expect an exit, a splash wound maybe. Take a nice clean rib shot and there should be minimal damage.

Ah my favorite subject, the Fireball I think you will be fine with Vmaxes I use a 40gr vmax or a 42 Calhoon HP and very often I have no exit wound the vmax makes a little entrance hole and than disintegrates inside. I load mine with 15.8 gr of LilGun and get 3550fps thats plenty to explode a vmax. I usually load a little lighter. If you try Lil Gun work up from say 15.0 gr If you have not tried it I think you will be very impressed. good luck on the hunt.

Good looking rig But, You better take a metal detector in case you lay it down and can't find it, It would be a heck of a note to loose a nice rig like that. Looks like you are getting ready to do some serious predator hunting. Good luck to ya........Joe.......
