Confederate Cavalry and the Revolver

Confederate Cavalry Colnel John Singleton Mosby said "We no more feared a Yankee charging with a sabre than if he held a stalk of corn. We did more than any other outfit to give the Colt it's reputation. And we did not purchase any of these pistols, they wer paid for by the United States Government."
Mosby's men carried two cap and ball revolvers into battle.

They were also known for carrying shotguns loaded with buck and ball.  In short, they used whatever would work.  Not constrained by regulation, being an irregular unit, they were pragmatists.

I live in the middle of Mosby's Confederacy. You're right about the revolvers. He had them when he stole General Ed Stoughton out of bed on March 9 1863.
