Handiholic's Hobbies ...
« on: January 31, 2007, 06:49:03 AM »
I am a curious kind of guy and I was kind of wondering what are some of the other things all you 'holics do in your spare time. Firearms is by far my number one love ( uh ... besides my wife/family) and that would include reloading of course. I also build things like furniture, draw, do wood burnings, and a little painting at times. I thought I'd post a few pictures in the hopes some of you would tell us some of your background interests. I hope I am not posting too many at one time.

Here are some of the wood pieces I have built ...

Other than reloading and collecting Handis, I guess I've never really had a real "hobby", huntng and fishing have been it other than for about 10yrs from '88 to '98 I was heavy into buckskinning and blackpowder rendezvous, but really that was just an extension of my shooting hobby. ;) Now it's just reloading, hunting and fishing. Fishing to include steelhead/salmon, smallies and some sturgeon.

I like to tinker with gunsmithing, and gun making.   I do some fishing when weather is nice too.

I also build, work on and maintain computers.  From internet machines to overclocked gaming machines to privately owned clusters and servers.

I used to build Mopar's in my youth, but I just dont have the money to build an engine the way I want.

And, I tinker around in a machine shop making all sorts of metal things.  Gun parts of all sorts including receivers to wind chimes.

Heh heh, it's been a while since I worked on one now, a month or so, but I also do computer work as a hobby, no income, just cost of parts, I do  repairs, upgrades and build my own PCs, forgot to mention it, another oldtimer attack, I guess!! :-[

1- Gun tinkering, reloading, shooting. And, as would be suggested by my presence on this forum, (and my website www.handiholic.com) Handis are my favorite, though I do not claim to be exclusive and only interested in them. Pretty much anything that launches a missle has captured my interest at some point. I might include hanging out and surfing the net for shooting related sites (like GBO) under this category, though this activity is threatening to become a category in it's own right. ;D

2- Small but long term continued interest in photography.

3- Also history is a big interest, and has been since I was a kid. My wife and I are recording (audio and video) interviews with veterans, of all services from WW2 to present day with the intention of turning them into a book. We will be including all nationalities, American, Canadian, Australian, British, and if we can connect with some, even vets from the other sides. (If you know any, or are one, open to being interviewed, let me know.)

4- I got interested in airplanes very young, and was an aviation hobbiest for years. Then I started working as a pilot, and it became a job. I liked doing it for the most part, but some of the spark went away during those years. Now that I am semi-retired, the spark is flickering again.

Pic of me and a DHC2 Beaver in Northern British Columbia Canada when I was a working pilot.

Well I work with computers all day long, so I try and stay far far away from them in my off time, except when absolutely necessary.  As for non shooting hobbies, I really enjoy fishing.  I wish we had nice sized fish like quick had pictured, but have to settle for some nice trout using a micro rod.  It's not so much of a hobby anymore, but I also make lighted moravian stars out of stained glass.  It started as seeing if I could do it, to making about 10 a week alongside my day job.  I only have one picture of a miniature one I made online.

If you would like to see more, here is a link to the site of the shop to which I sell.  I make all of these except the bottom one, which is made by someone else.

1. Fiddle around with rifles, not much on hand guns or shot guns. Re-loading and the rifle range of course.
2. Hunting, mainly deer but need to find a new lease in 2007 because the one in 2006 wasn't to good.
3. Fishing but got tired of fooling with a power boat so now use a kayak for bass and catfish ... almost that time!
4. Ride a road bike (bicycle) to keep old body in shape. Luckily we live next to a big park with 24 miles of bike path so don't have to fight traffic. Been a little cold lately, even in Texas, for that though.
5. Play a little harmonica, diatonic and chromatic, when in the mood.
6. Keep some good cigars around, especially good for liars fire at deer camp after the days hunt.

When Im off, Hunting is mumber 1 (after family) I think as a younger man it was the shooting  & the adreniline rush that got me. quick ...
Those are some beautiful fish that you have caught in some of the most beautiful country I have ever seen. I made a trip up to Washington state a few years ago and went into the Cascades for a couple of days. It was awesome. I can only imagine what those fish would taste like cooked out on an open fire.

I really like what you are doing with your new website. I love flying (as a passenger) and always wanted to fly in a plane like that for a fly-in trip. My father just passed away in December and you would have enjoyed talking to him about the war (WWII.) He was based in Northern Africa and flew many bombing missions into what was Yugoslavia, Northern Italy, and many other destinations. He had a story about being in Rome that was my favorite.

Those moravian stars are beautiful ... very nice.

The rest of you guys ... Shaner/burntmuch ...
Thanks for adding to this post. I think it is really interesting to know a little more about you guys and what you're all about. Shaner ... take it slow with all those wild women ... I was single after my divorce for 11 years (until I got married again last April) and I think I know what you're talking about. One day, you will find a lady that you'll love almost as much as your Handi's. Then you'll know she's the one! burntmuch ... what an admirable profession ... sorry about the barn ...

One more picture of a few of my burnings ... gave most of the really nice ones to my son and brothers ...

Hanging out in the woods..... I don't think that is as much a hobby as it is medicine for the soul. 8)

I used to steelhead fish year round, but as I got older, winter weather seems to have gotten colder ::), so I only fish em summer and fall now, smallies and turkey hunting have filled in the gaps!! ;D The Klickitat has some to-die-for bank angling and public road access, btw!! Although I have a 2 man cataraft, I mostly fish it and the North Fork of the Lewis from shore with an occasional guided drift or jet boat trip on the Cowlitz with a guide friend, Steve Leonard. http://www.stevesguidedadventures.com/

Well I don't like to be outdone by Quick and his fish. I do some fishing too.
We catch the big Chinooks near the Alaska border. I got a lot of other hobbies too.
Like sailing and kayaking, skeet shooting, and fixing guns.

Well I had to add my friend's Pat and his 57lbs Chinook, caught last year at the same spot I caught mine. Hope my knees are in shape to go again this year.

They take pics for their bulletin board, my fishin partner asked the photographer what he got since he was my net boy, he told him he got to get outa the way for the pic!!! I have to say I'd trade that salmon for a mess of perch, they are indeed good eating, right up there with walleye!!

Yes, plug cut herring fishing just off the bottom in the "Jaws" out of Garibaldi, 17lb trilene. ;)

Obviously guns, hunting and reloading takes up most of my hobby time. Still use H&R/NEFs for most big game hunting, but have gone to AR platforms and 1911s for fun and giggles.

Second would be street riding. I ride a Kawasaki Vulcan 1600 and my wife rides a Vulcan 750.

Next would be camping and riding quads. I ride a 400 and my wife just got a new 250 for Christmas. Can't wait for warm weather!

And in the past I've had an interest in HO train modeling.

What an impressive show of talent and skill! The woodwork is beautiful, the fish are awesome, and the old deHavilland is one of the coolest airplanes ever made (yes, Mustangs and Spitfires are near the top of my list, but there is something about classic utility aircraft and slow, docile trainers that appeals to me. My #1 is the Piper J-3 Cub, followed by the Aeronca Champ, So call me a wimp!)

My hobbies: 1. Shooting and handloading -- center-fire rifles, old S&W revolvers, Ruger 10/22s, and trap, and adapting various right-handed guns for left-handed use, 2. Guitar -- have played for over 40 years, 3. Amateur astronomy -- built an 8" reflector some time ago and haul it out when the Wisconsin climate allows, 4. Reading -- history and biography. Currently reading _Six Frigates: the Founding of the U.S. Navy_ by Ian W. Toll.

I will fish on rare occasions, but when the weather is good enough for fishing, it's also good enough to go to the range. I live only 15 minutes from the Holmen Rod and Gun Club, the very best shooting club I have ever known. It has become my home away from home. I hope you all have a gun club as friendly and safe as mine.

Hello,

I enjoy shooting although I do not get to do it near as much as I would like.  I have just recently started re-loading so that adds a new element to the hobby.  I have only hunted birds (dove, duck, and geese) but would also like to try hog hunting if I could find a place to go that I can afford!  I live in Houston so there are plenty of opportunities near by, but I have no idea how to hunt big game or do the field dresseing.  I did not come from a hunting family.  As of this time, I have never done any big game hunting.  So, it is hard to find some one to teach an older guy the "ropes".

I enjoy running and lifting weights.  I run 3-4 times per week and lift weights 3X per week.  I have been running one marathon each year for the past 6 years.

I aslso enjoy making mideval armor.  I have a suit of armor that is the type of armor worn around 1350 AD.  It has some plate armor and a lot of chain mail.  This time period was a transition time between mostly chain mail armor and full plate.  I also collect replica mideval weapons but I can't make them as that requires a forge and blacksmithing skills which I do not have.

Reading sci-fi and watching sci-fi movies are aslo interests of mine.

Last, but foremost, I enjoy being with my family.  I have two daughters 14 and 18.  Married for 20 yrs so I must enjoy being with the wife too!

Matt

If you ask my wife I have too many hobbies, Along with guns I also shoot and hunt with a bow, fishing both fly and regular (fly tying of course) wood working. Along with the hobbie of keeping my boys out of trouble (twins just shy of 11 and a single shy of 9). Adding on to all of those this past fall we bought a cabin on a lake in northern Saskatewan (about 9 hours drive).http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=dore+lake,+sk,+canada&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=5&ll=54.622978,-107.402344&spn=18.464102,55.283203&iwloc=addr

At this point it is not what you would call winterized but it is livable from May to October. happly enough it is still mostly bare studs inside so insulating it, and finishing it right, will be lots eaiser. My goal is that when it is finished, it could function off the grid so solar panles and such.

BTW when you see them hunting big whitetails in Northern Saskatewan thats where it is.

OK I can't find the pictures of my 65# king, or my 187# Halibut, but I'm not a fisherman anyway.  I live to hunt.  Gun Collecting and reloading is just a means of doing better hunting.  It seems everything I do is to improve my hunting time.  Snow machine, four wheeler, 4X4 Truck, boating, rafting, I even learned to fly just so I can get into areas that are other wise inaccessiable, places commercial pilots won't take me.  I like to fly low and slow, to spot what's on the ground.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.'
