I remembered a little info. about Rourke's Drift
that you may find interesting.
As I am sure that you know, there were approx.
140 British soldiers, and by historic account there
were several Boer's there also. They were attacked
by 2 Zulu military units known as Impi's
for a total of about 4,060 men. Historic accounts say
that the battle lasted for 2 days. (Actually several Hours less)
What interests me is the fact that the Quartermaster's
report stated that 20,000 rounds of .577/450 ammunition
was expended!! 20,000 rounds fired by 140 men
from Single-Shot Rifles!! That must have been a brutal fight !!
Its no wonder so many Victoria Crosses were earned in that battle!
Also, I must only imagine the Bravery of the Zulu's also,
That was their second major battle in 5 days, They totally
destroyed the relief column heading for Rourke's drift!
With Spears!
I have also wondered why they didn't have a single piece
of artillery at Rourke's Drift, I thought the British didn't leave home
without it.
