First Mortar
« on: January 31, 2007, 04:41:01 PM »
My heart has always been with the cannon, but after reading so much about the mortar and finding a chunk of 4"X5" iron in the basement, I thought I would take a swing at one.
The machineing was done on a 10"X24" Logan lathe.  I left as much stock on it that I could, for size and I was haveing trouble getting a good cut , due to metal, bit angle, lathe speed, or probably inexperiance.
I first turned a long shoulder so as to have a good chuck bite.  That would be the trunnion end anyway.  Then contured the barrel, you can see they are shallow cuts.  Next was drilling a 3/4" hole the length of the barrel including the powder chamber which finnished out at 3/4"X 3/4".
From here on I have enclosed some pictures.  The first one is of a homemade boreing bar, which is appropriatly named.  I found that I could only get about 3 or 4 thousands cut on each pass.  You can see that the bar isn't attached to the cross feed. so the cutting bit had to be adjusted each time.   ( Boreing)  The bore finnished out at 1.709".

The next one is of the reversed barrel end being rounded.  That cut was done free hand, and then filed to smooth.

Here we have one of the buisness end.  Notice that the vent hole could be a little more forward.  Picking the almn foil is a bit tricky.

This is one of cleaning up the handles after being forged and drilled.

The next two are of hacking out the furniture.  I inleted the barrel to a stationary 45 deg.

This is all the pix that I can have for this post.

Thanks to RickK,  Radio 2,  and Double D,  for your help in trying to get my pix posted.   Well it took a while, but with some extra help their
in.   I'll wind it up on the next post.

Div Arty,

not sure, but I think something went wrong with the picture posting process.

Are the pictures on the internet someplace or are they still on your computer?

The pix are in MyhostPpix and I thought after tryiing a few times I had it right.  Went with the directions of putting the jpg number  in the text like directed.  Guess I'm better with a hacksaw and file than with these computer buttons.

I tryed that to and didn't work for me! just go into your computer where the pic are stored and open one up, At the top where the tool bar is click on image then resize, a window will pop up and under units choose pixles.  Now change the size to (with to 540) and save it as it was. now it will be small enough to post.  Hope this helps! Just upload from your computer! :) Forget the myhostpics for now!

Div Arty,

Go to https://www.gboreloaded.com/mhp/login.php and log in and then click on My Images at the top of the page and a page that looks like this will come up

The instructions are on that page and say:

If you want to share an image with other people on the internet, copy the code from one of the three boxes next to each image, depending on how you want to share the image:

URL - Copy the text in the url field if all you need is a url to give to people.

HTML - Copy the text in the html field if you want to link to the image from a page on another website.

BB Code - Copy the text from the BB Code field if you want to include the image in a message on a website discussion forum that uses standard bulletin board codes (forums running phpbb, Invisionboard or VBulletin support this format of linking to images).

Look to the right of the picture and you will see the boxes.  For this board and to keep it simple, just click on the  yellow box under BB Code and copy the code in that window. it should look something like this.
Code: [Select]
[img]https://www.gboreloaded.com/mhp/images/DoubleD/cannonpic16crop.jpg[/img]
Paste that in the message window where you want the picture to appear.

Now you can go back to your first post, click on modify and remove the bad links and post in the correct links.

The tags in the URLs you posted look something like this :   http://100%200507.jpg/

They are missing the actuall domain address and subdirectory of myhostedpix

If you can see the picture on myhostedpix, right click on it and select "properties". Among other things you will be shown the actual web address (URL). You can copy it off that window and paste it here.

The last two are the final product.  After antiqueing the barrel  and hardware, a little trick done with graphite and varnish, the wood work was finnished.  I expect there are some improvements that could be made.  It is not scale, it is what I had at hand.
Cost---- electricty and some varnish.  Shoots good.  About two 45 APC cases of BP, 54 grains, slings a golf ball over 100 yds.
Note;  cover your furniture with almn foil when shooting.

Looks good.

You don't need to load the powder in foil for a  mortar.  Just por it loose in the chamber.

Rick and Powder keg; If it comes out here is your answer.

It's a process that turns any hard surface that will hold paint into an old wrought iron finnish.  Like anything else, practice on some scrap first.

To start, spray your project with flat black paint.  Not heavy, just cover it.  Let Dry.
Next, give it a coat of varnish.  The heavier the coat the ruffer it will look when finnished.  Watch the runs on any vertical surface.
While the varnish is still wet, sprinkle with ( Flake ) graphite.  The thicker the varnish, the more graphite will stick and here again the more corroded it will apear.   ( LET DRY ).
Then, brush off the excess graphite and  BURNISH the finnish to suit your taste.  Finaly, coat it with a gloss or satin varnish.
Here are some samples of how you can use this technique.

The first are some straps on a tea trolly.

Second, is a family crest.  The helmet, eagle and Fleur De Lis were blocks of plaster of paris cast onto the curved shield then removed carved and finnished.  The sword and halberds, no not steel, sugar pine, carved and finnished.  No one has caught on yet.

Last but not least, cannon.   Well, there you have it.       Div Arty
