Favorite 45-70 deer loads
« on: February 01, 2007, 09:39:26 AM »
Hey guys what are your favorite 45-70 deer loads. I am looking for speed and flat trajectory. Live in Mississippi and can hunt with a 45-70 as a primitive weapon.

What are you shooting? A trapdoor or a contender? Maybe a few loads from a Siamese Mauser would help? A little more info on the gun will keep us both safe!

Hey doeroller

I can't help much. I just started loading 45/70s back in August. Anyhow I started with some new Starline brass that had been sized, trimmed and had the flash holes uniformed.Started a little low and ended up with the following out of an NEF Handirifle.

New Starline Brass
49.6 Grs IMR 4198
CCI 200 primer
Hornady 300 Gr. HP

about 2050 fps muzzle vel.
2800 on the energy
1 1/4" three shot group at 100 yards.

I only got one shot during our first primitive weapons season in Dec. It did a fine job on a 100 lb doe at forty yards.

My Handi didn't like the more potent charges I put through her. I remember a five inch group with about 52 grs of 4198.

Good Luck

MS Mule
