question for experianced .30-40 Krag loaders..
« on: February 01, 2007, 04:55:12 PM »
i was trying a load from Ken Water's Pet Loads, and i made a goof. i misreadthe load iwas looking at and loaded 43 gr's of H4350 over a magnum primer for a 220 RN. it was supposed to be 41 not 43. my Lee manual lists a max load of 42 gr's for this powder and bullet, and thats with a standard primer. am i still in safe pressure limits or should i just pull it apart and try again?

Pull them!!!!!!

Depending on which bullet you plan to use, I'd start with 34.5g and work up. It is VERY important to ALWAYS begin loads at the starting point and work up. That becomes even MORE important when working with older guns, older calibers, and older load data.

You may already know this but it never hurts to be reminded. I've seen first hand the disasterous effects of using either max data to start and using other folks data. Blown recievers and torn up guns are only the least of the problem. Picture a bolt coming back at your eye when the lugs let loose or the entire receiver coming apart in your face. Start at the starting point and work up your loads, you'll enjoy shooting much more (I think) and keep all the important parts of your body intact.

thats what i figured. i've used 39.5 gr's of this powder with the same bullet, so i will start from there again.don't want to push my luck with a rifle that is 108 years old and has 1 locking lug!
