629 Mountain Gun

I'm thinking about buying a 629 Mountain Gun based on all the negative feedback regarding Taurus nowadays. Any comments out there regarding the .44 S&W 4" barrel Mountain Gun?

I have one I purchased 5 or 6 years ago, and it is my go to revolver. I am completely satisfied with mine.

Stout recoil with full house loads due to the light weight, but a nice revolver for carrying for the same reason.

Perfect field carry piece for me.  I shoot 295-300 gn hardcast swcs in mine and the recoil is not as near as snappy as some of the 240 gn loads.  More of a push than a snap.  Can't go wrong with one.  HTH.  Mikey.

Thanks for the quick responses and positive feedback, I think they pushed me off the fence. One other thing...how are the grips as far as size, I have large hands.

Mine has the factory Hogues, which are good for large hands, but are a bit narrow when it comes to recoil.  I also love mine, and it will shoot several loads into 1" at 25 yds.  which I consider pretty darn good for a stock revolver.

I have a 625 Mountain Gun which is a 45 Colt.  I handled one of these in a store one day in 44 Mag and new I had to have one, it just felt great in the hand.  I chose the 45 because I thought it would have enough power for a good woods gun but would not kick as bad as the 44 or 41.  Mine shoots great at 25 yards and carries like a dream in a hip holster.  I would recommend it in whichever caliber you want.

my newest n frame is a 45 colt mountain gun with those finger groved wood grips. I have big hands too and the finger groves just werent staggered right for me. I took them to a belt sander and sanded the fingergroves right off and it made one of the best feeling smith grips ive handled.

If you don't like the grips that are on your Mt Gun, I'd suggest either the Hogue X frame rubber grip available through S&W or Herrett's Jordan Trooper grip which would be made to fit your hand. The X grip has a covered back strap so it feels larger than the standard Hogue mono-grip.

I am a Pachmayr rubber grip fan. I have a house full of revolvers and nearly all of them have Pachmayr's on them. They are bone ugly but "Pretty is as pretty does" and they DOES! .

I have a 624 4" and while it is chambered for the .44 Special, it is essentially the same revolver as your anticipated Mountain Gun. It is noticeably easier to pack than the regular 629 4". It also seems to handle better. I use mine with the "Skeeter" load, which is 7.5 grs of Unique behind a Keith 240-250 gr (Lyman 429421). It is a really good combination.

Incidentally, it is also a good small game load. I have killed a number of snowshoe rabbits with it. Mostly, would jump them when grouse hunting. They would get up and run about 25 yards then stop and look to see what I was doing. What I was doing was tucking my shotgun between my knees, drawing my revolver, and as soon as they stopped slip a Keith bullet "through the slats". High percentage shot, and no meat damage. My family just loved rabbits with no shot in them. You DID have to be ready for them to stop as they would only wait a few seconds.

I have just purchased a blue m29 mountain gun and I like it very much.  I did put pachmeyer decelerator grips on it (they also cover the back strap) as with full house 44mag loads its really uncomfortable (Ihunt with 300gr Hornady XTPs over 21gr H110).  My walking around load is a 300gr XTP at 1000fps and its quite manageable.  It's kinda like a larger SW M19.  I recommend it highly.
