Crimping 30-30 Shells
« on: February 02, 2007, 10:02:33 AM »
Does anyone know how to crimp bullets without a crimp die. I have dies but not crimp die. I load a few 30-30's and never put more than 2 or 3 in tube, but i was curious if anyone knew if there was a way to crimp without crmp die?
thanks in advance.

If you have standard rifle dies, your seating die also crimps. Check out the instructions that came with your die set of do a search for instructions on how to adjust your dies. In a magazine rifle, especially a tubular magazine, a good crimp  should be used to prevent bullet setback and insure proper powder burn.

Savage is right your regular die will do the job. But I've always seated & crimped in two steps. I know it takes a little bit longer but I've never had a feeding problem. It works well with cast or jacketed bullets. Make sure you keep the cases trimmed each time. GOOD LUCK

The advise you have received is very good and will work.

However, a Lee Factory Crimp Die only costs about ten bucks or so and is well worth the money. I load quite a few 30-30 rounds, and a few years ago finally bought one of the Lee dies. Wonderful! i still use my RCBS dies for sizing and bullet seating. This method is quick, easy, and required no further die adjustment once my bullet seating die was properly set. Just another thought.

Another vote for the lee factory crimp.  In any caliber that you crimp, I have several. ;)

Yep, the Lee Factory Crimp Die is a good investment.  It will put a light crimp (just enough to remove the bell) or an extremely heavy crimp.  It places the crimp nicely into the cannelure of the bullet.  I have them for at least 1/2 dozen cartridges--One of Lee's better tools.  Good-luck...BCB

spotdoctor,
Both the std dies or the lee dies will work fine. One suggestion I'd make is to trim all your cases to the same length after sizing so the crimps will be consistant and uniform. It's an extra step I do when crimping any rifle rounds. A consistant crimp will help the accuracy of your rounds because the bullet pull will be the same for all the rounds.

I second seating and crimping in two steps. It help to keep from  crushing the shoulder on 30-30 cases. Seat all your bullets then back the seating stem out a few turns and turn the die down to get the desired crimp.
Just another worthless opinion!!
