model 200 for varmits?
« on: February 02, 2007, 01:33:59 PM »
I was looking at a stevens model 200 in 22-250 today, and was just wondering about using it for varmiting.  I know the 200 has been proven in many hunting situations, but does it have the accuracy to be a true long range varmiter?  Would you trust a model 200 to reach out and touch a coyote at 300 yards or beyond???

It is a very economical solution of course, but I am looking for a 22-250 to get out there, way out there.  If this rifle can't handle it, any other recommendations of economical rifles in this caliber?

Thanks

Corbin

corbanzo -

Short answer, yes, I would trust a Stevens, as it is basically a Savage design.  My first 22-250 was a Savage 110E with a sporter-weight barrel.  Neither the 110E nor the Stevens are much in the cosmetics department but they are fine where it counts.  The Savage would frequently put 3 shots on paper at 100 in groups you could completely cover with a dime.

That said, I would probably get a wood-stocked Savage instead as I'm not in love with the plastic they use in the Stevens.

no problem with the 200, it is just a pre accutrigger 10 series savage.  And savage is definately know for accuracy straight out of the box.  I personally would invest in a trigger group for it though, although many say that most of the factory triggers can be adjusted pretty well.
