Cleaning a Marlin Model 60
« on: February 03, 2007, 07:49:21 AM »
Somewhere I found a link to a webpage that had a complete step-by-step tutorial on how to take down and clean a Model 60.....color pictures and everything.
Well of course I forgot to bookmark it and of course I can longer find it!

If anyone has possibly seen it and saved the link, I and probably many others would appreciate if you could post it here.

If not, I'd appreciate hearing anyone's experiences and tips for cleaning a Mod 60.
I'm really good at taking things apart but not so good at putting things back together.
I looked at the manual but get really gun shy when they start talking about anything with springs.

Thanks for your help.

Mine have never been cleaned other than running a silicone cloth or oiled rag over them and dragging a Hoppe's bore snake or patch through the bore and I have never had a malfunction. The time may come when I will have to do a more complete cleaning though....<><.... :D :D

Thanks JR, that's the one!

It would still be helpful to hear anyone's tips or does and don'ts for cleaning the Model 60.

Thanks

I wish to add something to the exellent link provided by jrdavis.

There are two notches, one on each side of the chamber.  This is where the extractors go when the bolt is closed.  They often get clogged with carbon and grit and can prevent proper extraction.  I've heard that toothpicks can be used to clear the notches, but a set of dental picks work real good.  Sometimes the grit is packed in there tight.

Also I do not recommend disassembling any further than the pictures in the link.  Those little springs and clips quickly disappear and can be a bear to get back into place.

While disassembled, inspect the firing pin.  One side should have a slight bevel and the end resemble the blade of a screw driver.  If it looks "rolled" or "blunted", it could cause misfires by not striking the rim cleanly.  The firing pin should also move freely within its slot.  They can bend from being dry fired.

Good Luck.  :)

I might add I have several tapes from AGI, when they go to clean a firearm they are using "Simple Green" from the automotive store they spray it on then let it soak then brush off the gunk with and old tooth brush and  rinse it off in HOT water then oil when dry
