Light DA striles
« on: February 03, 2007, 02:14:49 PM »
About Christmas time I  bought a DW 357 Model 15 I think (4" interchangable barrel) which has a problem firing double action - only an average of  4 rounds will go off per cylinder. When I look at the primers they were hit but the dent is not very deep,  They will go the first time if I shoot them SA and  all chambers will shoot every time SA. I am shooting handloads with CCI primers and have no problems in a S&W 686, model 10, securtiy six or charter arms undercover. I just replaced the hammer spring with and foring pin with factory originals from Numrich. Anyone have any ideas as to the problem? Could it be an out of spec transfer bar?

Does it have a light SA trigger pull?  I put a Bullseye spring kit in my mod15 several years ago to reduce the SA  pull.  The result was erratic firing.  I liked the light trigger so I experimented and found that WW primers are softer and had 100% firing with these primers.  If you don't mind a little stiffer trigger pull; get a factory replacement spring kit.  With the side plate design; it's an easy do it yourself fix.  Also check your firing pin for wear and buildup, more uncommon but a factor in light taps.  The springs are the easiest and first try for  light taps.

One of mine did the same thing. The mainspring had been "Clipped" by the previous owner. The place I bought it from gave me
a new spring to fix the problem. It was fun trying to get the new spring in. I had a hell of a time getting the screw in and started so I could assemble the gun. The new spring was much stronger than the one that was in it.

Other than the rear sight blade falling off a few times, and the cylinder stop falling out on another one, that mainspring was the only real issue I had with any of my 6 DWs (5 Model 15's, 1 715). I had my sights welded by a friend and a gunsmith took care of the cylinder stop issue by peening it, and then pressing it in with some stud mount. I put a couple of thousand rounds through it, and it never came out again..

CCI primers have been notorious for being "hard" in the past but thought they had fixed the problem.  I usually use Winchester primers and have not had that problem with them.
Take care and keep you powder dry.  :D
