well, i guess i will put on a dress and a pink shirt then.

i like the idea of shooting a nice big slug and a nice velocity without being punished. way too many people go for "horsepower" over what suits their needs and end up worse for it. i have seen time and again people recommend beginners skip right over the 44 or 41 or 45 and go straight for the 500 smith or 460; and i dont care who ya are, that is just silly advice.

yup, maybe some of you big bore guys are crack shots; but if you are suggesting that everyone is able to shoot those heavy calibers at those velocities well, you arent fooling me. why do you think competion shooters load down? they must be stupid or something.....or worse...pansies.

until someone shows me that an animal is going to be any more dead when you shoot it with your nitro boomer than it is when i shoot it through it's heart with my pipsqueek 44 mag( or my fantasy 500 special ), i will wait to put on that dress.

oh, and one more thing... take 100 shooters, make them shoot 50 rounds with a 500 smith and a 44 (or 500 special), and i bet that the vast majority of them do way better with the 44(or 500 special). just for arguements sake......

Sorry Myronman but I have been converted, so I can not agree with you at all. Now I want a 600 mag with a 1000 grain slug, no comp for plinking hunting and bulls eye competition. I bet my new dream gun would be a dream to shoot.

I would like to see a .454 casull carbine, like rugers .44 carbine. that would be a great companion to the .454 haandgun and also a great thick woodland gun.

Im not saying the big bores are for everyone. In all reality if you took your comparison test youd probably find that most of them couldnt hit the broad side of a barn door with a 44 mag. There certainly not for beginners and take a dedicated shooter to master them and to be honest i have to agree that about 3/4s of the people shooting them are guys that buy them to impress there buddys and never master them. But to genericaly say that anyone that buys one is a machco man it rediculous. It doesnt take a 300 lb man to master them just someone that wants to honestly put in the time. Yes lots of compeditors down load for competion i do it all the time when shoot ppc myself. But you dont see silouete shooters downloading or any long distance compeditors with rifles or handguns and i doubt youll see many hunters hunting anything over 500 lbs downloading any gun.

We are in the Handgun hunting area, not the competition shooting area. I guess you missed that try to be a smart guy!

My 600 Mag dream gun was a joke, I did not know some of you would take it literally. I did say it was for groundhogs... I guess I have to watch what I post or the thread monitors will jump on me like a duck on a June bug.

After buying a few dream guns over the years, my dream is not so much the gun as the sights. My dream gun would be a factory line bored revolver in a caliber that starts with a four. It could be single or double action. The real dream part would be the sights. I would like to have a set of plain old open sights that I could see as good as I could 30 years ago. Folks thats dreaming.

and how many people actually hunt stuff that big? myself, the biggest thing i am likely to encounter is a black bear. yes, they get pretty big where i am at, but if a 44 wont do it, then i guess i am in big trouble. btw, my bro carries a 10mm for backup instead of a 44; and it has been VERY effective. so much so, that some of the guys that he frequenst the woods with have gone that route also. one of my cast bullets at a moderate velocity is going to have more wallop than that 10. anyhow...i digress.....for the most part, i agree with ya lloyd.

nope. didnt miss a thing. i load my 44 magnum to about 1000-1100 fps, which is about mid range for velocity. i have no need to push them to max velocity. i enjoy shooting more at that speed and deer dont know the difference one bit. which make s the idea of the 500 special what appeals to me.

so long as i follow the rules, i dont worry. what i do worry about is trying to be constructive to the conversation or topic, and helpful to people. and i try really hard to never take myself all to seriously, be overly defensive, or type things that i wouldnt say if the person were standing right in front of me.

all that aside, i stilll like the idear of that 500 special, and another great point was brought up about sights. would it be too much to ask for a gold bead set up for production pistols? i think sights on production guns are one of the biggest weak points.

Geez guys, I always felt that if I couldn't do it with my 44 magI would use the dang shotgun or rifle(true).

I would like to see someone make up something a bit smaller - like one of those 5.7x28 FNs you could use in the field for small game; good sights, good trigger, etc. And maybe something about the same size or a bit larger for the 7.62x25mm for personal defense and larger small game. Something larger for the 10mm or some of the wildcats out there.

I guess this is why they call it a wish list (lol). Mikey.

Not a matter if someone disagrees with me, I like discussion but I don't have to agree with you either. I am glad you don't expect less from me. At least I am consistent.

But as you said all that aside, con-bon makes 500 special ammo and could be used in a 500 Mag. But it is only about 300 fps slower than a 500 Mag, and still the recoil is a little stiff. I can down load a 500 Mag to 500 special, but I bought the 500 Mag to use as a 500 Mag. The velocities you are talking about for a 500 special would be right where the 50 AE is at currently.

i was thinking a pistol that would be reasonable size, that is one of the biggest turnoffs for me about the 500 smith and the 460; theshear size of the guns. to me the size of those "pistols" are obcene. like mikey said, it is easier to carry a rifle. i was thinking this 500 special would be in a five shot single shooter and run bullets around 800-900 fps. the more i think about it, the more i realize that while it would be cool, really, the 44 mag is all i really need.

how about a glock 20 longslide?

We all have different reasons why we like what we do. If they are not for you that is fine by me. In my opinion carrying a heavy handgun in a holster is a lot easier that an rifle.
I like to hunt with everything, handguns, bow, rifle and shotguns. I am an equal opportunity hunter. I like them all.

How about a semi auto 500 Mag, looking like a 1911.

to bad you dont live closer or i would make you fall in love. Either of my two bisley vaquero 4 inch round butted .500 linebaughs are right up your alley. There compact and easy to holster very accurate and with 440s at 900 fps are real pussycats. I talked to dustin when i sent my last gun in. Its going to be another .475 but ive got enough powerful guns and was think more on light 480s He recomended chambering it in 475 as you could use either brass that way. I guess the same goes for the .500s. I know redhawk is in love with his big framed smiths but there a tad on the big side for me. If smith would make a 500 special on a gun the size of an N frame or even a tad bigger id be fighting to get to the front of the line. The 4 inch 500 smiths arent to bad but they still look huge compared to my .500s. Personaly I have no interest in pushing a 500 over 1300fps anyway so the size is just a waste to me. A smaller smith in 50 special or even 480 5 shot would be fantastic. I think smith would sell a boat load of them and id bet redhawk would even buy one of each.

Redhawk made a good point, the speeds you are talking about for the .500 special is about .50 AE territory. SO, how about a Blackhawk in .50 AE. Existing cartridge, short, sturdy brass, and you could use a Desert Eagle magazine for a speedloader.

I would love to see your two bisley vaquero 4 inch round butted .500 linebaughs. I bet they are some nice guns. You keep talking up them linebaughs, I may have to get one done.

What gun did you send him to do the . 500 linebaughs? I may also consider a .475. You are right, if S&W made a 500 special in a smaller frame I would get one.

I currently have two of them one was a stainless vaquero bisley .44 and its pictured in John taffins last book on sixguns (not the new one on the .44s but the one before that it was built by John the hter was built on a bilsey vaquero blued .357 and was built by dustin and i have had one other .475 and two other .500s that John built that i was talked out of. I currently have a redhawk being made into a 480 and a flat top aniversary 44 being made into a 475 by dustin and one more .475 being built by a gunsmith that prefers to reamian unknown . Ill see if camel still has picks of my two .500s and can post them here. Myronman if you go to the single action forum and look right at the top of the stickys theres dates for a shoot weve had in michigan for a few years now if your intersted in comming.

Here's a few I'd like to have......

1)Ruger Mark III Hunter w/6 7/8" brl. in .22 MAG, w/their 1-piece base & rings the slab sides use to come with.
2)Ruger Super Redhawk, 5-shot, .500 special, 4" brl., shaved down in weight like Wild West Guns "Wolverine".
3)Freedom Arms to make a "Bisley" grip frame like Rugers, as an option for new guns or fitted to previously sold guns.

That's al that comes to mind right away........
