Reaming Maximum from Magnum chamber?
« on: February 04, 2007, 04:20:56 AM »
For a while now I've been debating what my next barrel will be.

I've seen much talk of reaming the .357 Magnum chamber to the .357 Maximum and it's easy to understand how this is done to the chamber,... but after extending the length of the chamber, what is typically done to re-establish the throat of the chamber?

Also,... who is set up to do such work?

I think most rent the remers and do it them selves. Someone will let you know that has done it. Then I will know also.

I inquired about this on Jan 14. If you go to the thread you will get some info. I would post it here but can't figure it out. It's under "I can do it with a little help from my friends".  I ended up trading MSP for one he already had done but there is useful info there.

The throat cutter is an integral part of the chambering reamer.

Does anyone know if the 357 Mag barrel is still available through the barrel accessory program?  It is listed on the H&R site, but it seems like I read a thread about it not being available anymore.  Thanks...

Reaming a Mag chamber to a Maxie is very easy, takes about 15 minutes
with reamer, T- handle, and a little cutting oil. Do not worry about the throat
the mag cambers are a little long to start with. or can be done with deill
chuck if you don't have chabce to a T-handle. Try it you will like it

Ya won't know until ya call em, they can be out of any barrel, anytime, it happens from time to time, but folks have been getting the .357 barrel regularly for over a year now, to include just recently. If ya want one, better get your order in while the gettin is good!

The 7.62x39 has been discontinued, if you're waiting for one from a distributor, you won't get one unless they just happen to have one in stock. :'(

Found a dealer that had 4 left in stock, I bought two of them.  Tried to get two with consecutive serial numbers, but they didn't have 'em.

I don't know of any .357 mag that has a long enough chamber for a Max with normal bullets.  I did see one a guy reamed out to Max and loaded with 4 very light wadcutters in a stack for his personal defence gun.  I bet it would do the job, and I bet the lawyers would love to get a hold of you if you ever used it on someone.

Cylinders on a pistol are to short for the max, You can buy a pistol chambered in it thou, If you can find one ruger made them in the balckhawk line but Dan Wesson makes them in thier super mag pistols. I want one. 8)

Badnews is right about the factory guns, the Rugers have become very collectable and are often used for conversions to big bores.  I think a DW would be easier and cheaper to find.  My friend won the VT. state sillouette championship years ago with a DW 357 Max.
