yup sinned again
« on: February 04, 2007, 08:52:41 AM »
well since everybody else is comming out with their sins i guess i will too.

i couldn't wait on nef to make a 300 win mag any longer so:

its still a single shot

300 win mag remington 700 action , fully customize by hart, mcmillan a5 stock , 28 inch bull barrel, trigger weighs in at 4 onces, with a leupold 24x BR scope , she weighs in at just over 16lbs (i'm told)

i've just started reloading for her useing burger 185 vld's nosler brass and rl-22 of corse all put together by forster dies.

so far i've not got a group bigger then .5 inches at 100

father forgive me
curiosity killed the cat , but i was lead suspect for a while

What is the purpose of this 16Lb beast? It definitely sounds like the pay must be a little better than it used to be. Sounds like a sniper rifle.

All the die hard Handiholics biting the dust. Wonder why ??? ???

Fred:

I still have my 338-06A-Square...and my 26" custom 270...at least for a little while...The Handi's are still the cheapest thing going for a good single shot...and I don't worry that they still will be this time next year...However...Lots of us die hards like other guns as well...and when new models come out...be they Handi's or not...sometime we buy them...I've always had  lever guns around...and for the last 4 years..they all have been 1895 Marlins in 45-70.....I've had them in all of the flavors offered and I got a new XLR last year...I've also had a sprinkling of Weatherby's around too...and just picked up a new Weatherby MOA in 270...Do I feel bad....or ashamed...nope...not in the least...Are there better guns available...of course there are..but..as most long term Handi-holic's...I love making the proverbial silk purse from the sows ears...and have done so time after time...Maybe I'll invest in them again...maybe I won't...This will depend entirely on what Marlin does...

Right now...CVA is producing a very interesting single shot...It has all of the features NEF could have had but doesn't.....Since Marlin has elected to not invest some much needed capitol into upgrading the plant...Most likely they won't ever see these types of improvements...I for one am glad someone has elected to take on the T/C line...and I feel they will be able to compete both in quality...and accuracy with their state of the art computer controlled plant...and having a Ed Shilen as a technical adviser...and them following his suggestions to the letter... The sad part of this is we could have had access to the new Bergara barrels if the SB-2's frame dimensions would  remained consistent...since they tested a bunch of them to do just this...but since they aren't...they won't be made available...since CVA wants a perfect fit with each of it's over the counter barrels..without the need to send them back in...They can do it with the Optima Elites..and also with the Encores...and as such... are available for both...I will be buying a few of them...especially since they are offering a 1:10 twist for their 26" bull barreled 22-250...this aught to be a real sweet heart with some of the heavier VLD's available...and a nice 26" bull barreled 300 Win Mag too...

mitchell...Yours sounds like a pretty cool rifle...and would love to do some ranging for ya some time ;) Ya gotta love those A5 stocks... ;) ;)

If I am able to make it out that way this year...I would love to...We are still unsure about the family's vacation plans...We were supposed to head out to Glacier around the same time...but that may be changed due to some health problems of the family...Were on a wait and see basis right now...

I don't see anybod actually giving up their Handis, they are just opening their hearts (and wallets) to other toys. And like mitchell says being ' open minded ' as well.

By the way Mac, not that I'm ready to give up on NEF yet either, but could you post a link to that CVA piece you mentioned? Definitely sounds interesting - especially if the price is decently modest.

I too am falling from grace as I am putting my .223 bull barrel up for sale (getting a gasp bolt) which leaves me with just the 45/70.  I’m waiting for reports on the 45 colt and if it works out good will spring for one of those and of course if NEF ever gets it’s act together (likes that’s going to happen) would jump at an accurate .44 mag.

Mac and Mitchell.
As you all know I have two fine Handi's, but I am not a Handiholic. These two rifles have caused me a lot of frustration by shooting loose. They are both fixed again. Would I buy another one? Only if H&R improves the barrels and the lock up. the rest I can live with and fix.

Today I bought another sleeper Ruger#1 in 243 Win and I have my eye on a new 7x57 Ruger barrel to replace the 243 barrel, which BTW is 23years old and the metal is just like new. The wood is very nice too. The barrel looks good too after I cleaned it and inspected it with the bore scope. But before I do some things with the 243 I will shoot it and see if it is accurate.

I am still looking for a 257 Roberts in Ruger#1. That 243 will make nice 6.5x284 rebore job or a 25x243. (Souper)

About Handiholics biting the dust was just to get a rise out of you guys. ;D ;D
Yes it helps to be open minded.

Fred:

I don't fault anyone on what they buy....and certainly can't fault you on getting a Ruger#1...in any caliber..They are normally sweet rifles...I've owned a couple of them before...The Handi's have been fun for me...they have given me less trouble than most others I have owned..They are inexpensive for the most part...which make them a good choice to do various projects with...I think that part of being a Handi-holic is enjoying tinkering with them...not just doing load work up..but..trying other things with them..wither they need it or not...This has been very enjoyable for me...since most all of the things I have done have worked out for the better...To me it's just time to start exploring other avenues...and not have all my eggs in one basket..

Wow.... sounds like a beast Mitchell....  You mentioned a long range near Waco??  Longest range within 45 minutes of me here in houston is 100 yds :( ... could you send me the information on the Waco range? It would be worth the drive for me once in a while once I get my new rifle put together.

If the CVA didn't have the toy I mean... "synthetic" stocks.... I'd be more interested...  I guess I should say, if they offered wood as well....

Thanks for the link Tim.... I did find a long distance range on there I didn't know about, bayou rifles... it's a private club and over an hour away, but I bet it'd be worth it to shoot farther than 100 yds...

DavOH..

The stocks on the CVA are anything but toys...They fit well..have a good recoil pad..and are fully interchangeable...The wood stocks will become available from CVA some time this year...so..keep that in mind...I'm not a synthetic guy myself...and the rifles I have owned that have had them on them...had to be quality ones...not flimsy that flex easily...These are good ones...and aren't outrageously priced like some of the others of similar design..I've already discussed with a custom gun stock builder to look into making some for these...and the Handi's as well...Hopefully both will be available to purchase at a reasonable price..I would really like to see a quality built synthetic stock built for the Handi...one that won't flex..and allow normal shooting off a bi-pod or the bench...As well as some good laminates of various colors...Time will tell if it all works out...
