Help with 45-70
« on: February 04, 2007, 10:39:56 AM »
went to gander mtn today and they don't have a 45-70 in their system with the wood stocks, the only one that shows up is the synthetic.I have been reading that most are not getting the accuracy with the synthetics.I want to use up my christmas gift cards so I have to go through gander. The cost is 240.00. Should I wait to try to find the wood stocks,or just order this one?Should only take three days if I order now. ???

Order it and then swap stocks here, someone will want to, or just buy a wood set and sell the syn, at least you'll be shooting!

Thanks Tim, I wan't to scope this gun,do you know if it will have the high or low stock on it?I was debating between this and a 30-30,but they didn't show ANY of those in the system.

Their web site shows it with a low comb stock which may or may not work for ya with a scope, many here prefer it for a scope.

I can't immagagin how a synthetic stock would produce less accuracy than a wood one. This is a two piece stock and I doubt the forend of the stock would be a problem. If it is its an easy fix.

Since you're new here, perhaps you should learn a little more about the syn forend before offering comments about a topic you apparently have little knowledge on. ;) If you have experience with the syn forend of the Handi, please share!! :D

These rifles seem to be a little more finicky than my 20 ga. I think I could shoot it without any forearm and still get a good group at 100 yards.I guess it's going to take awhile for me to figure out what makes these things tick.

That's the point, they'll all shoot well without the forend, put it on tho, and it affects how it shoots a lot, the syn forend is the least user friendly and causes a lot of problems since it's not easy to work with like the wood or lams. Shooting a Handi without the forend is how you determine if an accuracy issue is related to forend pressure, it's real easy to eliminate it as the culprit, just shoot it without it. ;)

I think you should get the rifle, try it with the synthetic stocks, if you don't like them they're easy and inexpensive to replace. I've got the synthetic stock and forend on my 45-70 and prefer the looks and feel over the wood. I have not experienced the accuracy problems that others have mentioned with the synthetic stocks, but I shoot mine with a receiver sight and limit my shots to under 100yds. Hope that helps.

I haven't had a chance to shoot my .30-30 with the Choate stock/forend yet, it'll be interesting to see how different it is from the wood.

Stuff the hollow stock with shipping peanuts, it will cut down on the noise some and adds no weight. I've done this with several syn stocks. I've also used insultating foam, but ya have to be careful with it!!
