All the fixin's of a .257 STW?
« on: February 04, 2007, 06:33:12 PM »
Hey All,

If one were to make a .257 stw what chamber would be the best to start with?  Something about shooting the fastest quarter bore around gets my all excited to put holes in coyotes from a falf mile.  I've got my eye a savage 112 with a fluted barrel and that accutrigger(how sweet!  ; )   ), now i need to decide if i can get the right action!!  Any 'smiths or stw owners that have a comment please post..            :-\ Thx a bunch.  :P

Yes, quite a bit!!! It comes into it's own if you use a 1-8 twist & a 130Wildcat as a min. & better yet the 156 Wildcat.

I guess I'm missing something here. If you were to make a 257 STW the chamber would be for a 257 STW. Next, if you got a Savage 112, it come's with a Savage action and if it has a fluted barrel, then if it's a Savage, I don't think it come's in 257 STW, you'd have to have it re-chambered.

All the STW cartridges are based upon the 8mm Rem Mag case.  It's a long action, magnum, so I presume 0.532" case head diameter.  I would expect any long, magnum action from Savage could handle the cartridge.  However I don't think they offer anything like that from the factory in caliber .257 or smaller (I'm guessing 110s come in 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag and maybe .338 Win mag).  So I don't think you could simply rechamber a factory rifle.  You'd have to rebarrel it.  Might be cheaper to contact Savage's custom shop rather than have a factory rifle rebarreled by another gunsmith.

Of course, if the STW cartridges require a .375H&H length action, then disregard.  Sorry, but I don't feel like getting my but up from the computer to go check a reloading manual to find out for sure.

Yes, the Savage has been chambered in 375 length rounds from the factory. Some make Pre-threaded for Savage barrels, such as Pac Nor, Shaw, Shilen & others. You may have to rechamber, but I am sure I saw someone offering this barrel. Yes, use the .532 bolt head, which is interchangeable. But again, why not just get the Allen & I know who can help you with that if you are interested.

My buddy built one on a Rem Sendero 25-06. Everything worked great with one exception. We had to change the mag follower to a magnum model. The action was long enough for the H&H case length without modification. Lex Webernick of Rifles Inc. did the blueprinting and rechamber, I'm not sure if he did the rails or if they worked as is. This rifle is awsome, fireform loads shoot into 1/2".

Now the bad news, Webernick no longer does these conversions, prefering to concentrate on building his own rifles. He did recomend another shop to another friend of mine for these conversions. A call to Rifles Inc. will get you the name of the other shop.

Ah, I get it.

Speaking of frame rails. I knew a guide in Alaska that had a 505 Gibbs built on a 1917 Enfield. To accomidate the 505, the frame rails had to be opened up some. He got the rifle and it fired fine but, when he opened up the action and ejected the fired round, the magazine emptied at the same time. I think that unless you like a single shot, you might bring that small problem up with a gunsmith.

Get out the rulers guys bigger, better, faster. Oh wait that may not be a good thing!! ;D ;D

Just going over my logs how about 75gr solid at 3722ft/sec. Now that's out of a 22" barrel of a 25-06. As a footnote it started to rain lightly with the last few shots. The rounds never hit a 18" X 24" target, I willn't tell you how tite the groups were, it was a keeper. 58gr W760. 3536ft/sec for 87 TNT's It's been awhile since I had this rifle and I forgot it liked the light rounds. It was a Remington but is know longer with us; :(
Barnes nolonger makes these bullets they were fun but I guess not for everyone. Never used them on coyots should have.

Hear anything about the 257 Hot Tamale today? It is still on this website, I have heard they don't "offer" this now.
The enhanced .257 STW part did not go as planned. You might want to see if the rifle maker makes the same claims today. 3,800-3,850 is more like it.

I heard they have backed off a little, but I did not have time to call them to verify.
