243 loads with BlueDot??
« on: February 05, 2007, 08:00:22 AM »
I purchased a 243 Ultra for my nephew (age 13) for coyotes and deer.  Does anyone have experience with BlueDot for a low recoil medium velocity load?  Thanks.

This is from an earlier thread on this forum. It is not for Blue Dot, but would seem to meet your purpose.

Lots of Blue Dot data over at the Accurate Reloading site.  Look for "Seafire".

Agree with Steve,
I got a boatload of BlueDot loads from Seafire and they performed beautifully!
Used the 243 loads with both lead and jacketed rounds and never a hiccup.
You do, obviously, need to adjust the POI when using each different loading but they are definitely lowered power , lower report and lowered recoil.
The lowest loadings were akin to 22 Mag.
Interestingly, great penetration even at 1200 fps so don't assume you can backstop with a bale of hay because it is "low powered".

Dusty223:  Another powder to consider is IMR's SR4759 - it is a great light load powder that works very well in all of the .308 based cartridges.  Even Seafire (or Mr. Blue Dot as he has been referred to) from the AR forum is impressed with it.

I have had good results with 80 grain bullets using 23.0 grains of SR4759 - pleasant shooting and very good accuracy.

Thanks, Dad, for taking me into the great outdoors.

I experimented with the .243 for well over 30 years, I found that the best all round performer has been 33gr. IMR3031, a 100 gr Serria BT, Federal barass, with a CCI mag primer.

This is a mild, but very accurat load in my guns.  I have used it for coyotes, hogs and deer with success.  All of my grandchildren shoot, and have no problem with this load.
