If your wanting just a cheap basic GPS you can hardly beat a Garmin Etrex. I have one and carry it any time I go into the woods. You can find them all over for under a hundred bucks. I think I picked mine up a few years ago for $90 or so at walmart.
If your wanting something a little better that has maps on it also then well just about any brand will work just fine. I just have always used garmin as they always worked good for me.

The bottomline eTrex from Garmin and the Magellan eXporlist are good units.  But like their big brothers and sisters there is a learning process.  Get it now and use it a lot before hunting season.  Learning to use a gps under difficult conditions is the wrong time.
There is a learning process to effectively using a gps.  Do not throw your compass and map away!

I have had the Garmin eTrex Camo for two or three years. It is very easy to use. If I can figure it out ANYONE can. It does everything I need for hunting or geocaching. With the addition of a couple new sattalites it's better now than it was when I bought it. No plan to upgrade since it's perfect for my needs.
