lake boom or lake cannon
« on: May 07, 2003, 06:02:18 AM »
this a strange phenomena that ocurs at dusk.it doesn't happen everywhere but if you stand near a lake you can hear what sounds like distant cannonfire. i didn't notice this until last spring after i happened to read a book on strange and wierd things at school. at first i thought it was fire works but there was nothing in the sky. does anyone know what causes this? as far as i know the cause is unknown.

i also saw what i think was a strange variation of the northern lights. i was camping last may long weekend and i looked up nd the sky was grey. this was at midnight. it looked like clouds that whereswirling and changing shpes at an encredable speed.i watched for about half an hour and ythen it quite suddenly disappeared and the sky was clear. i was completely sober at the time so this couldn't have been a beer dream.

I don't know about the lake part but you may be hearing a propane canon that ranchers use to scare off predditors. They work on a timer and go off every so many minuets.

When I lived in upstate NY several years ago, I was close to a lake that boomed quite regular. Sometimes pretty loud. The explanation I was given was gas releasing from the lake bottom caused the noise when it broke the surface. The lake lies between two high ridges that sort of amplified the sound. It's a big lake, close on to 40 miles long and pretty wide, and old Indian legends had the noise as the "Voice of the Gods", and kept them pretty much away from the lake.
On the 19th of April, 1775, a tyrannical government sent an army to disarm its citizens. They ran into a touch of trouble.

I never heard the boom , but the northren lights thing I have seen . That was one of the most beutiful things I have ever seen . It looks like them tornado clouds you see on tv when the play them at a really fast speed except it is a light .

Kevin,

Could these loud cannon reports be sonic booms from aircraft at very high altitude?  Reports in the Adirondacks in northern NY years ago of hunters getting the sh** scared out of them from B52's at tree-top levels avoiding radar.  All in the name of the Cold War Games.
Concerning the Northern Lights....I saw them one summer's evening back in the 60's right here in Syracuse, NY.

i gave the sonic boom theory some thought and i don't think it's possiable. there would have to be an awful lot of aircraft because it is a fairly rapid occurance and it only was noticable at dusk

What's wrong with the theory that you have 1)a blackpowder cannon enthusiast nearby, and he's taking in his flag at dusk?? 2)Some of the granite oe igneous bedrock substrate in the area may be contracting after a long day of warming sunshine, and "grating" together.  3) The Great Spirit has gas? :D

what time of year are we talking?   ice or no ice?   lakes really thunder when the ice is getting thicker.   my dad first experienced this while out fishing with me.   i thought he was going to $#!T his self.    :)    he almost took off running.   and he didnt believe me when i told him that the ice is actually getting thicker.  i had it boom right under my bucket (that i was sitting on) once and man did it resonate up through and make me jump!
