To this day I have never seen a Saiga 100 30-06 for sale even on the internet.

In any semi auto rifle,  it would be wise to look at other companies besides Remington.  Remington has a track record of dumping their customers along with their models when things don't work out.  They've never stuck with one design very long. Instead of fixing them, they trash the model #, give it a new stock, and call it something else.  Their are many people who are happy with the Remington semis, but odds are they will hand them down to their children before there are problems.  Most people only shoot one box at the most through their rifles each year.  You can't get more reliable than an AK-47 derivative. I'd go with a Saiga no matter how ugle they are.  Hunting rifles don't have to be pretty.

I read a positive review of the Remingon 750 30-06 in guntests.com.  They actually preferred it over other more expensive semi auto hunting rifles.

I just wonder what one of these new 750's would be able to do with a trigger job.

The question you have to ask yourself, will Remington still make this model 10 years from now?  Will I be able to get parts if I need them.  Their track record has not been very good.  Odds are you'd be stuck with it and have to part it out like I did with my 742 woodsmaster.

If you didnt keep saiga clean it'd jams and will have problem anyways. Remington autoloaders are legend and lot of hunters killed lot lot of deer with Remington autoloaders. Its history.. I dont know about Saiga but i saw in Dunham sports store and  it is so ugly! All i know it is made in russia. I perfer Remington and i am proud to say that I am owner of Remington Model 750.  ;)

yep, me2.. proud of both of my remingtons, 7400.s like them alot.. zero problems ..

We hammered my saiga's in 308 and in 223 without a stove pipe or jam of any kind.
I have one question;

Can you disassemble your remington completely to clean and lube it?

I've owned a remington semi auto in 30-06  but i couldn't take it apart to properly clean and lube it.

The quality of the remingtons have been going down hill since '94.

If you lube your saiga's with moly its a whole different gun, it smooths everything out and the trigger too.

I don't own a Remington 7400 or a Saiga 100.  But, just for fun, lets put two brand new ones, thoroughly cleaned, side by side, and start shooting. I'm betting the Saiga would easily breeze through 300 rounds without a hickup, and the Remington wouldn't reach 80 without jamming.

So my question is do folks out there think this is a real rival to the Remington 7400?  Do you think sales of the 7400 in 30-06 will drop in the near future?  Or is the Saiga-100 something that just won't catch on?  Would you buy one over a 7400?  Why/why not?

I dont think the Saiga 100 is  a rival to the Remington 7400.

Interesting Saiga is doing what Valmet did in the 80's which is take the AK platform and make it in to a hunting rifle.  The Valmet Hunter was just that.

I have owned the Saiga combo guns (IZH-94) and thought is was a very functional hunting rifle, it used an 11mm dovetail mount for the scope.

I do think there is a potential market for the Saiga as a low to moderate priced semi automatic hunting rifle.  The show Sons of Guns talks about Saiga builds in a lot of their episodes.   And the Saiga semiautomatic shotgun appears to be popular.

Saigas aren't available here in Canada.  Our government is hard on the job protecting us from evil-looking firearms.  Although we can buy guns manufactured by Norinco - go figure!
Hunting is Exciting!  Bolt actions are BORING!!
Don't mix the two!

Hey William,
that is an interesting project your working on.

Saiga taking the AK platform and making it a hunting rifle is exactly what Valmet did in the 80's with the Valmet Hunter.

Saiga shot guns appear to be popular.

Shooting at small targets with an AK platform or AK variant is going to be an interesting challenge.  Shooting full sized silhouette would definitely be doable.

I have a few extra saiga's i purchased in 223rem and in 308win i'm going to play with soon.  I figure to order two kalinka scopes for them.  My saiga in 308win has a 22'' barrel  I'm thinking of getting the better russian quality scope for it thats still being used in russia today.  Its got the BDC (bullet drop control) and the 3 post german style lens too.  I think this scope is $399.   I have a czech ak scope on my 223 saiga which i need to see how good it is before i replace it.
Go to www.kalinkaoptics.com   search for saiga scopes .
I'm going to scope just 2 of my 6 saiga's for now.   My first saiga in 308win w/16'' barrel was only $307 OTD , thats $289 list and my saiga in 223 was $259 list.
Just lube the saiga with moly and watch it push them bullets out.   Its really an accurate ak/akm in a sporter wrapper. On Sons of Guns he uses the saiga as a platform for all his builds and i wonder why??

The Remington 7400/750 is legendary alright, . . . . for all of the wrong reasons.

I've never shot a Saiga before, but I'll bet you can fire 100 rounds through it without a single hitch, as opposed to having to scrub the chamber out every 20 rounds or so to keep it from jamming.

Every time Remington brings out a new incarnation of its semi-auto rifle, they loudly proclaim that its an "improved" version, which means they are trying to prevent it from jamming like its prior version.  The newest version is the third in the line by my count.

I hunted in West Tennessee, and North Mississippi for 30 years, and never saw deer hunter carry one.  I've hunted in the Shenandoah Valley now for 5 years, and have never seen a deer hunter carry one.

I guess the affection for these rifles  must be a regional thing.  The northeastern states perhaps?  I am sure that some folks have had good experiences with these rifles, but it seems to be the luck of the draw.

Since the last time I posted on this topic (back in 2008) I've actually bought and sold a 750 in 30-06.  I bought mine with the intent of making into a nice hunting rifle.  I put a burris 3-9 with ballistic plex on it and with match ammo I got decent enough groups for a hunting rifle.  I ran 150, 180, & 220 grain ammo through it all with great success and complete reliability.  My 750 never had a hiccup function wise.  Why I ended up getting rid of it was because of the legendary Remington finish they put on the rifle.  Every time I coughed near that rifle it got surface rust on it and the one time I was hunting with it out in the rain was an absolute mess to wipe down when I got back.  In hindsight, it was a good rifle and if I had to do it all over again I probably would have just duracoated it to protect it from the whether, but it just makes me sick to see a rifle take to rust that easy.  I had some other unrealistic hopes for the rifle regarding accuracy also.  I was hoping that with my handloads I'd be able to use it at the bench for some longer shots so when I went hunting I'd have a semi auto 30-06 with no brainer holds out to 500 yards.  That didn't work out and I sold the rifle, but it wasn't because the rifle was a jammomatic or anything like that.  To this day, I've still never seen a saiga 30-06 and if I did I'd probably buy it.

I have a 742 that I bought new in 1967.  Still shoots and cycles great.  Secret is small base dies, trimmed brass, and moderate loads.  Gets the job done.  It is a hunting rfle and not a plinking rifle.  I don't shoot volumes of ammo each year with mine.  If I fed it max loads and heavy bullets, I'm sure I could bang it to death.  Many others have, so it must be true.

William

You should look at the HK SLB2000 in 30-06.  It should fit the bill for a hunting gun and a 400 yard plinking gun.  It is one of the more accurate autoloader that I have shot. The guns are selling for $700-$800.
