I've got a Savage 110FP .308 rifle that I want to work with and develop a load for the 196gr trunc. cone GC bullet from Saeco. I'd like to push it at the fastest speed that I can sustain 1.5"-2" groups at 100yrds. My brass has been trimmed and has had the flash-holes uniformed. The bullets will be sized to .309" through the Lee sizer and Alox tumble-lubed. -I don't have a luber-sizer.-
(This sizer and lube has been a great combo for the Lyman 113gr spitzer, offering 1"-1.5" at 100 yards when pushed to 1920+/- fps, when I do my job)

OH, I'm kind of locked into Hodgdon brand powders as well.

My initial tests had the 196's at 1900-2000fps (wide SD) using 33gr of H4895. Groups were around 5"-6".
Yeah, I know... Yuck. :cry:
Anybody have any thoughts?

my best accuracy with that bullet was with aa5744 and 2300 try those my 308 put them in one inch all day.

Thanks for the reply Mr. Marr. I'm not sure I know who makes 2300 powder. -2400 I've used enough of, but 2300 is a new number to me.
What kind of velocities were you able to push?

2300 is an Accurate arms powder. Works great in a number of cartridges. I was able to git consistant velocities of 2000fps with this powder. Loading density is very good to. At the moment I am testing some AA 8700 powder there slowest in a 30 br and it works very well with cast bullets.

If you are locked into Hogdon powders (I just like 'em) a couple I like for cast bullet loads are 4227 and 322. Both handle well, I get consistent results (in velocity spread with smaller standard deviations that other powders I've used.) The 4227 is faster burning and seems more efficient than the 322. For me the 322 may have the edge in accuracy. I still have to do a ladder test with both and then compare the most accurate load for each with that bullet wt. (Lost some time with a recent move and eye problems.) My preliminary data suggest that I'll end up using less that 23 gr of the 4227 and more than 28 gr of 322.

I thank you both for your replies and help. I have H-4227 next on my list to try. I swore purchasing allegience to Hodgdon when I saw how generous they were with their products at every single match we've held. The company has been great to deal with, and their development of Pyrodex is (IMHO) almost soley responsible for the proliferation of muzzle-loading. They gave 500lbs the stuff to the crews working on the movie "The Patriot", just because they were asked if they would.
This earns my respect and my dollar.
Although, AA has been somewhat generous with prize donation as well...

I don't wish to flog a deceased equine, but I can't find 2300 listed in the Accurate Arms loading manuals, nor can I find it on their website.
Is it still made?? Does it go by a different name??

if you are going to try Hogdons I would go with 322 or varget both work very well and give better load density.

that powder is Accurate Arms 2230, they also market 5744 witch works well with cast and reduced loads. C.E. Harris used to recommend 20 to 25 gn.s of Reloader # 7 in the .308 th 30-06 cases.
