Who has a 741, how is it to shoot?
« on: February 08, 2007, 05:43:22 PM »
Hi, post #2!  I have a 15-2 and have been searching for a 741.  I was wondering how the recoil is with the 41.  A friend had a Ruger Blackhawk (?) in 41 and it was painful to shoot with the steel backstrap against your palm. 6 rounds and put it down, he finally just got rid of it.  His 480 Raging Bull with the thumper loads is better to shoot than the Ruger was, as were any of the 44 mags I've ever shot.  I want a 8" (preferably heavy) barrel 41 like my 357 and was interested in hearing opinions on the recoil and accuracy.  If the general consensus is that it's like smacking your palm with a tire iron I'll have to consider a Raging Bull in 41 and let the mass tame it, but I REALLY love the thought of a DW 41 if I would enjoy shooting it.  Thanks in advance.

I have one 8" heavy vent, I had to change grips to the old style wood wide one. It is okay now as it spreads the recoil over a wider area. It shoots okay, about 2to3" groups at 100 yds, off of bags. I never thought it shot as good as it should. I main'ly shoot 210xtp, and cast performance 250. I am also interested to see how others are doing accuracy wise. Mine is # 43 waited 3 years for it. I have a monson blued 8" Vent Heavy.  Most of the time it wears Houge neoprene grips.  When I shoot silhouette, I have to go to houge wood grips to make the 4lb weight.  I normally shoot 235gr cast at about 1250fps.  I can shoot a 40round match with no discomfort.  I also shoot the rcbs 215 keith style bullet at about 1100fps.  That is a downright pleasant load.  Accuracy is about as reported in previous post. 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 groups with cast.  That would be scoped and off of bags.

I can't see how a 741 with an 8" barrel could be objectionable. I have two Supermags in chamberings that are making a lot more muzzle energy than the .41, and they are a joy to shoot. The large frame target grips are smooth and fill the hands nicely, so there's lots of surface area.

I have had a 6" heavy vent rib since 1985-- --it is normally very pleasant to shoot(more so than a Blackhawk) -- kinda of depends on the grips some are better than others

Thanks very much guys, now I want one even more!  I had a feeling that the gun with the right grips would be comfortable and accurate to shoot but I've never shot one in 41 so I wanted to ask.  The 357 is a dream to shoot but I know that's apples - oranges.  I just bought a lever action Marlin in 41 as I have been panning for a while to add 41 mag to the calibers I shoot, and I want a revolver to go with it.  Now the hard part, finding one for sale in decent shape.

Get thee behind me satan.  DO not even mention a lever .41 cause it will cause my eyes to twitch, my mouth to water and my billfold to sponaneously loose weight.  (I am hoping to get a semi custom .41 mould of about .260grains later in the summer)

Thanks for the laugh!  I hope the brand new, in the box 1894FG 41 mag, 20" barrel, with checkered hand-grip stock and forearm shows up tomorrow (bwahahaha)!!  I got it for less than I see used ones go for too...not to spur you to get serious about looking for one or anything...oh yeah, free shipping and no FFL charge...sorry, just had to mention that....  My dad has a 41 mold, but I found some good deals on bulk bullets so I'm just going to order some and start loading.
